An honorable mention would be Nikita Khrushchev. He was born to a peasant family in one of the poorest villages in Czarist Russia, worked in a metal shop in his youth, joined the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War, eventually fought in WW2 against the Germans in Kharkov and Stalingrad, and eventually became Premier of the Soviet Union during the time when they sent the first man into space, tested the largest nuclear weapon ever built, and putting an end to homelessness and illiteracy, all while rebuilding most of the country following the war. He ultimately proved to be an idiot reactionary scumbag, but nonetheless, pretty impressive for a peasant.
