Hey! I was watching this video for an assignment, it's the first video assignment this year. Last year, we were assigned many pointless videos where I didn't count it as fun learning, and instead, I just considered it "work." I came into this video expecting the same thing, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found out this video was so fun and educational at the same time. Thank you for this video!

Just taking in this video while I can since it's probably the most laid back and entertaining thing I'll get all year from this class

some notes I took while watching, thank you for the video!!

When there was a food surplus, the population grew as a result! This process laid the foundations for future generations (till now).

Early government arose to manage agriculture which was made up of men since they knew the most about farming
Most rulers for most of history rule with absolute power
Patriarchy was the norm (as people became for sedentary, men did most of the hunting and gathering pushing women t domestic life)
River Valley Civilizations
Mesopotamia (rich city)
Egypt
Indus Valley
Shang China
Empires: classical people under one supreme authority
Why was this important?
Continuities in state building
Use religion to gain legitimacy (ones who had tolerance: Cryus the great, Darius I)
Create monumental art and architecture (burial: pyramids, terracotta army, olmec heads)
Make sure the state controls economic systems (taxes, coins, good economy allows for trade and better agriculture)
Build infrastructure (making trade easier: qin dynasty, carts and road width, rome- aqueducts, royal road)
Others
Excluded or enslave people
Let them practice
Cultural syncretism
Resistance- its hard make it get better
Burn religious books
Targeted persecution
Wars
All civilizations fall
Leadership corrupt overtime (the want for power)
Empire is way to big
Disconnect from capital (leaders arise from faraway)
Expensive
Borders are hard to defend
Religion
China
Warring States Period -> Confucianism (continuity in Chinese History) If everyone knew their place and did what they were supposed to, everything would be fine. RELATIONSHIPS ethical ad obiandnt
Scholar- Gentry: educated confucian ethics who an bureaucracy, civil service exam rich kids
Daoism, remove yourself from material world, opposite of Confucianism

Traditional value = patriarchy

Hinduism = India, caste system (people in power had powers)
Zoroastrianism and Judaism = Middle East
Zoroastrianism = persians, suppleanted by Islam
Judaism = ethnic religion, no need to convert people, always excluded

Universalizing Religion
Buddhism = no caste system, merchants is low so many converted
Christianity = Jew who advocated for equality and a close relationship with deity, lower caste liked this
Rose independent from the state. Leaders of Christanity were just religious leaders. Separate church and state
Islam = Muhammd was both a religious leader and a miliary leader. Mosque and state are closely related. Loved merchants, because mUhammd was a merchant. Created innovation and scholarship in Isalmic world.

Extensive trade routes
Silk road: expensive (luxury goods), pastoral nomads connected this (facilitated them)
Saharan Trade: connected sub saharan Africa to the rest of the world, leading to large trading kingdoms profiting off of Africa’s wealth GOLD
ex. camels
Indian Ocean trade: monsoon trade, lateen sails, carry luxury and bulk golds
