So many people confuse the benefit of functionality over aesthetics. It doesn't matter how textbook-perfect a hoof looks if the cow is lame.

My oldest horse (21), as a result of an injury at a year old before we got her, has to have her front feet left a little longer than you would expect. If they are trimmed to look perfect, she goes lame on one foot. We know why, but over the 17 years we have had her, we have had issues with farriers knowing better, doing a "correct" trim and making her lame until the toe grows back and the coffin joint opens up again.

One farrier said he can fix her problem by putting special, expensive pads and shoes on her, she went lame straight away. But with a functional trim, suited to her, she can be ridden, jumped etc and is sound.

I know it's not a cow, but it's all the same thing. Functionality over aesthetics is best for the animal, whatever animal it is.

Why does a nutritionist think they are qualified to dish out advice about feet? Usually I learn something in every video but this one was SUPER informative and made sense. Thank you for that lesson.

I love how you are so respectful to not just say non-hoof trimmers are not idiots but that farmers should consider who is the expert in each aspect of care. Very polite and professional. Always a joy to listen to your videos.

I am 75 years old and before finding this channel, I didn't even know that cows feet were trimmed. And now, I find these videos are so interesting and so happy to learn about cows. When I was about 8 years old I visited a farm for a few weeks and learned to milk by hand my Great-Uncles Jersey cows... It was a great Summer and I still have fond memories of those beautiful cows.

I hope some one shows this to the farmer and he shows it to the nutritionist. Philip Labrie is a farmer I can tell, lol. His opinion about the growth is spot on.

Wonderful video. You are a master at explaining. You make something that seems difficult to understand, easy to understand. I'm sure this video is very helpful to farmers.

This is amazing analysis of what hoof trimming is doing for the cows, the farmers and all of us - if we are what we eat, I want happy milk and cheese!❤

I would think that a sole that's too thinned out would be painful for a cow and could lead to worse problems, so I would assume it's better to cut them to a length that's still comfortable and functional for the cow and get them trimmed again when they start to get too long, just like many of us do with our fingernails. It's not too hard to figure out.

That was the best explanation Ever! I understand now why and how often to be functional! Thank you 👍💯

Enjoyed this information very much! Have never been near a cow besides the county fair and I have been watching for 2 hours now. I'm so glad you take the time to share this. I wish the videos were a little longer. It's almost therapeutic

Nutritionists usually have a product to push...every company has their own propaganda. Your farmers should just trust that you know hooves better than any salesman and go with the pro!

Excellent too bad some of the farmers listen to people who aren’t professional in trimming!

They grow faster in spring and summer because the grass has more protein

That would be a great cross promotion. Have the Toe Bro go with you on your rounds for a day, and go see the Toe Bro to get your feet done!

Im not a Farmer but I totally understood what you're saying. With that sort of thing, ask the expert on Cows' hooves. The guy who trims them. 👍👍👍👍.

I'm not a cow person and I would have benefitted from seeing the start of the leg, for context on the diagram. Loved the info! Thanks!!!❤
