My 2nd drawing professor showed us this when we did deep dive anatomy studies. I don't really draw from life anymore, but it is a helpful tool/ thing to keep in mind. Proportions are incredibly important especially when it comes to stylized characters ^^

What helped me a lot at getting better at proportions was to compare the negative spaces I was creating with the ones in the reference. It's like my brain tries to "fix" proportions of well known shapes, which makes it hard to just look at something and copy it realistically. But the negative spaces are "new" and my brain doesn't have a specific shape or form it thinks the negative space "should" have. So it actually lets me see it the way it actually looks. Which in turn makes comparing and copying easier. So when I look at my drawing and the negative spaces are wonky, I know the positive ones are as well. I fix the negative space and then adjust the rest of the drawing.

Wait so that's how you do it! I always just find similar parts like you noticed at the end and eyeball spacing for everything to get it decently accurate

Was taught this in a life drawing class not too long ago, but I’d forgotten the head tilt! Thank you so much!!

Fr, took a figure drawing class and it blew my mind. Sighting is tricky at first, but it’s so incredibly useful.

I'm so glad I work digitally. It's so much easier with transform and liquify tools.

I needed this video about 5 years ago, it's good to hear it out loud now, but back then, I was flying by my seat and I passed with well grades miraculously.
But seriously, thank you for shooting it.

Drawing 1 professor showed this to us when we were learning perspective. She said you can use any measurement you want and that it is just to help scale stuff up and down. I have 2 marks on my pencils that I use as a base for measurements
