Tip to help you pass smog if you have a check engine light

If you have a check engine light I will show you a simple way to slip you through smog inspection so you can get your car registered.

Thank you. I've been stressed preparing for annual emission test in Virginia due to my check engine light coming on regularly. Your suggestion along with the correct drive cycle procedure worked perfectly for me and I was able to pass my Virginia Emissions Test. My 2005 Lexus RX-330, with 195, 000 miles, gets a Check Engine Light regularly with no other problems. Happens once every 400 miles or so. OBD II indicates catalyst Bank One or Two outside specs. I did the following and it worked great after resetting error codes using OBD II device connected to vehicle:

1. Hooked up OBD-II and activated it by turning ignition switch on. Cleared all error codes using OBD II. This resets all emission monitor functions which then requires some specific drive cycle procedures to get the emission control system computer to analyze and record sensors to pass the test.
2. Started car when engine was cold. Let it idle for 3 minutes with A/C full on and rear defroster on.
3. Immediately drove to freeway.
4. Using 1/2 less brisk throttle accelerated to 55mph and cruised at that speed for 4 minutes.
5. Allowed vehicle to slow down without using brakes to 20mph.
6. Immediately accelerated briskly using 2/3 throttle back up to 55mph and cruised at that speed for 4 minutes.
7. Pulled off Interstate and checked my OBD II display to see if all monitors were reading okay. They were.
8. Per your advice, I immediately went to testing station where I passed the annual Virginia emissions test.

I did exactly what you said to do with the exact same issue. Pass smog soon as I pulled away from smog check light came on. Oh yeah and that P0420 code. Was still showing but I passed. Excellent video✅

This is a helpful video to understand what monitors need to be set to pass a smog but unless your P0420 code is intermittent, resetting the CEL won’t help. In my case, the code would come back on within driving 2-3 miles of clearing all codes with a OB2 monitor. I kept clearing the code and trying again hoping the light would not come back on one day until I finally used Rislone which did the trick!

Thats a great scan tool. I had that same one in the case with all the different connectors. I only used the round Lexus connector on an older vehicle a few times.

I passed my smog test today after following these useful tips and purchasing the scanner. I passed even two monitors were not ready (C+EV) and the check engine alert was still off. There are upto two monitors not ready allowed in our state. Your video is very useful to me.

As an inspector, nobody I mean NOBODY brings their car in early for smog check. Even though I always tell people to come early, the vast majority would rather wait long times and come that last weekend of the month. Then cry when it fails citing they have no time to fix it since it expires in a few days. I tell people to come in the middle of the month to avoid this.

Thank you man...i'm going to remove the non-fouler around the corner from the sm0g place and get it smogged. The check engine light should stay off just long enough to pass my truck. :)

I found a trick that has got me passed 4 times now in 3 different cars that had the P0420 code. You can clear that code by filling the tank with non ethanol gas and driving it around for several days. This has worked for me 4 times now. Once you pass the smog test, just go back to using cheap regular again...
