10. The name "Area 51" derives from its marking on 1950's Nevada Test Site maps. Today, the official name of Area 51 is Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3, or AFFTC Det. 3 for short.
9. The first known use of the area was the construction in 1941 of an auxiliary airfield for the West Coast Air Corps Training Center at Las Vegas Air Field. Known as Indian Springs Airfield Auxiliary No. 1, it consisted of two dirt 5000' runways.
8. Area 51 was built around a Dry lake earning its other name "Groom lake". Military officials called this place as "Paradise Ranch", "Waterfront", "Dreamland".
7. There is a Conspiracy Theory which says Moon landing was staged at Area 51. This theory is well supported by video evidences which show the army men and astronauts testing land rovers and various life support equipment.
6. Area 51 was and is involved in a lot of top secret work on things like spy planes that the country needs to keep other countries in the dark about. The planes that were tested at Area 51 were involved in many missions including an A-12 spy plane that figured out where the USS Pueblo was after it was captured by North Korea.
5. Over half of all UFO reports from the late 1950s through the 1960s were accounted for by manned reconnaissance flights (namely the U-2) over the United States.
4. 90% of reported UFO sightings could be easily debunked, while the other 10% were “a number of incredible reports from credible observers”.
3. There is very high security at Area 51 and the government won’t talk about what they do there and what is in the area. There have been rumors of aliens and their spaceships in the area but those are not proven.
