Deinococcus radiodurans evolved to live in deserts. The process of being dried out (desiccation) causes enormous DNA damage. D. radiodurans, accordingly, has mechanisms to repair its DNA which allow it to thrive in extremely dry environments. Coincidentally, this confers upon D. radiodurans the ability to survive massive doses of radiation. There are also some fungi (black yeast, for instance) that thrive in highly radioactive environments. Such fungi have been found within the ruins of Chernobyl Reactor 4. It appears that the fungi use melanin to gather energy from ionizing radiation in a method akin to the way plants use chlorophyll to make energy from sunlight.
