Japan Siphonophore ROV Encounter 1991 #shorts

Extremely bizarre SIPHONOPHORE filmed in Japan, 1991. One of my favourite deepsea clips ever, and a hivemind creature that looks straight out of Lovecraftian literature.

Music: “Chernobyl - Approaching Disaster” by CO.AG

What else lurks within the abyss?

You know it's Japanese TV when there's random Japanese celebrities reacting to something crazy in the corner

Everyone is so worried about the aliens in space, I'm worried about the ones in the ocean.

Spectacular find! These organisms are rarely observed alive. Some reaching 130 feet long, longer than a blue whale. Fascinating that they have no central brain system, and move entirely by their exquistitely intricate nervous system. Made my day to see this creature on video. Thank you!💚💯💥

I'm still shocked that it's not a single organism but many working together.

This footage belongs in the Deepsea Oddities Hall of Fame right next to the Magnapinna.
Great respect to all the brave and dedicated scientists who make it possible for us curious, non-seafaring folk to have access to all these discoveries. Great appreciation and gratitude to the Deepsea Oddities team for creating these amazing and artful videos for us to ponder and to enjoy, as well as to become more acquainted with some of those deep primordial fears within us... yeah...

Brilliant. Thank you.

Siphonophores and colonial organisms in general fascinate me. There’s something deeply interesting IMO about how rather than being a “monolithic” single organism or a bunch of physically desperate creatures like ants they’ve managed to occupy a grey area in between. Someone should try making a speculative evolution world where siphonophores became the dominant paradigm for animal life

I was today years old when I found out these existed. My brain literally short circuited.

A lot of deep sea creatures are freaky but at least somewhat recognizable as real things, but certain siphonophores are more like indescribable lovecraftian horrors that you hear about from someone but never believe them until you see it for yourself.

Ironically, alot of siphonophores just look like normal animals, at least sorta. The man o war is a siphonophore but it looks a lot like a jellyfish, so people just call it a jellyfish. Other ones are just long networks that look more like really long worms. Very few look like this

Fun fact, they're carnivores. And with that fun little tidbit I will never touch water again

Siphonophores are my absolute favorite creatures (or mass of creatures) in the whole world. They can be beautiful or terrifying and even both at the same time.

There are few things in this world capable of giving me straight up primal sense of dread from simply looking at them.

The siphonophore is one such thing.

I studied history at university but my second choice was marine biology. The deep unknown fascinates me

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the smaller ones growing on top are being fed by the older ones on the bottom. The larger ones release tendrils to catch their pray and share the energy throughout the whole colony. What a sight!

Hey I just wanted to comment that I love your channel a lot, and that it started my obsession with deep sea invertebrates around a year ago ❤️
