Welcome to Norse Myths, Legends, and Folktales, where MyLinda Butterworth of Totally Stories interprets the written word for your listening pleasure. Today we learn how a ferryman named Harbard toys and insults Thor in “The Lay of Harbard."

Thor traveled over the tundra and great a wilderness before he came to the sound, a swift, deep channel of water. When he came to the shore, he saw on the far band a figure with a flat-bottomed boat. Thor shouted across the chasm and asked if he could get a ride across the waters and that he would pay him well. The grey-bearded man pulled his hat down over his one eye and began to banter with Thor by first telling him that his mother was dead. this riled Thor and thus began the I did this, what did you do banter between the two men across the chasm. The ferryman continued to throw insults at Thor until Thor threw a bolder across the chasm. Did Thor ever get a ride across the chasm? You will have to listen in for the whole story.
