The Australian Hotels Association will tour marginal seats such as Bass and Braddon this week arguing ahead of the federal budget for a cut to the excise tax in draught beer, says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

Mr Clennell said the tax is due to have one of its twice annual CPI rises on Tuesday.

"Every schooner bought costs 70 cents in terms of government tax – the AHA wants that halved in a bid to help pubs struggling in the wake of Australia's COVID summer," he said.

It's easier (less restrictive) to drink at home, no QR codes, no silly social distancing.

Time to kick this greedy politicians out of government. Cut taxes not increase them, in fact get rid of a lot of them. Paying for big government has to end.

I just don’t drink alcohol anymore, I’m better off without it and I’m not giving the crooked government any more money than I have to. It’s a mugs game anyway.

What about the ridiculous excise tax on durries? I bought 3 cartons duty free in Dubai last week for less than the cost of 2 packets in Australia

Greedy Gov can get more tax from alcohol now than the 500% markup from Cigarettes

As an older Australian an EXCISE tax is a STATE tax NOT A FEDRAL TAX so asking for your federal government to reduce the excise on tobacco, alcohol and fuel cannot be done.

If they drop the tax on alcohol, then drop the tax on cigarettes as well, the prices are absolutely ridiculous.
Yes they are bad for your health, so is drinking, so is junk food, have a look how many obese and fat people there are are, (they clog the health system as well, so dont start non smokers lol)

Gotta be tough or an alcoholic to drink in Aussieland. The same bottle of Gin is almost $50.00 cheaper in America vs Australia. Bet a lot of tourists don't know it until it is too late. Everything is sky-high down under.

As if the famously greedy AHA will pass on the excise cut,

Check out the world tobacco prices study, a sample of 161 countries Australia 🇦🇺 and New Zealand 🇳🇿 come in at number 1 & 2, meaning that both countries have a 99% tax on tobacco, compared to the bottom 10 countries. Big tobacco sells the sample pack of Marlboro 20's to a country for approximately 50 cents, Australia sells it for $27 & $26 in NZ.

In the US a cheap 24 pack is $14.62 US or $20.29 Australian, top level is $21.98 or $31.31 Australian . Where being taken for a ride on beer taxes / Wine (excise ) twice a year .
In Australia Coors beer (US ) is over $48 Australian dollars ( 330 ml ) but VB is around $54 Australian (375 ml ).

It's strange how they tax spirits & now beer more than wine. Alcohol is alcohol no matter what the drink is so why isn't wine taxed the same? Maybe politicians have their fingers in a few wineries.

Abolish fuel and alcohol excise taxes.

Replace with a fast food excise tax.
