My interpretation is that the asides to camera are a psychological necessity for the character to maintain her sanity following the death of her best friend, and an escape from her dysfunctional world. So, the priest is in effect the first person to come into her life who can 'hear' her again - because he understands her, he recognises her breaking the fourth wall.
