Why this scene in SPIDER-MAN Across The Spider-Verse Is PERFECT. In this video, we break down Miles' escape scene which I think is just perfectly executed, from the build-up to him being trapped by Miguel in Nueva York to the big chase scene with literally every version of Spider-Man ever created appearing on screen to try and stop him. Throughout this video, we're gonna be breaking down what happens in the scene and also how it delivers on the themes set up in those early scenes to knock it out of the park. Let's get into it!

So Spider-Man Across The Spider-verse feels like one of those comic book films that stands as a milestone in the genre. After that seminal first film it seemed like it couldn't be topped but somehow this movie masterfully improves on it in every single area.

I have to admit that on my first watch of the film that I thought the first act was a bit slow.

booooo

However there's a major turning point in the movie where everything hits the fan and it turns it up to 11. In retrospect those early scenes are made even better by what happens in this one and it just brings the entire film together to cement the main themes of it.

Now the scene I'm talking about is of course the chase scene in Neuva York that happens at the mid point of the movie. Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down the build up to it, what happens in the scene and also how it delivers on the themes set up in those early scenes to knock it out the park.

Cheers for checking out the video everyone. Apologies for all the Spider-verse vids back to back this week I’m just taking a week off so wanted to get some stuff I could easily record to go out through the week. Hope you guys enjoy it either way. Peace.

What I noticed right away was in the speech Miles’ mom gives him, she says “Don’t let anyone tell you, you don’t belong.”
And then when Miguel is like, pounding him on the train, he tells Miles you don’t belong here. And what I love is that at that moment, miles beats Miguel and gets away, as if his mother’s words were playing in his head. God I love this movie.

There's something i found pretty tragic about this scene. As of the climax of that train chase, Miles was completely willing to cut off his relationships to his previous Spider friends, Peter B, and especially Gwen.

Since leaving Earth 1610, there hasn't really been positive interaction between the two of them. Starting from the moment she says "Goodbye Miles" followed later by her saying "i should have never visited you again." Which this is later paralleled by him after learning of his father's fate, reaffirming her statement, "you're right, you should have never visited me" and finally "Goodbye Gwen" before exaggerated swaggering his way off the train.

It really feels like one of those ABBA format poems.

Every Spider-Man story in existence: "Suffering builds character, suffering builds character, suffering builds character"
Miles: "Nah, screw that."

the nueva york sequence imo is the best directed sequence in animated movie history. From the Cannon monologue, foot chase, train chase and go-home-machine, just absolutely insane

I really really loved how warm and cool colors were used in Gwen's universe to show her emotions. This movie is visually amazing and i would hang up every frame of this movie on my wall if i could, it's soo good

I'm honestly not convinced that Miguel is right about Miles being a mistake. I suspect there are larger forces at work.

If you compare this scene to the first time Miles truly became Spiderman, it's almost as if Miles did two Leap of Faiths. First one being Miles stepping up and filling his role as Spiderman, and the 2nd being that Miles doing his own thing and controlling his destiny.

I think one of my favourite funny scenes in this movie was the talk with the principal or whatever she was where she talks about their story as a struggling family and they were all like- "I'm not struggling"

I thought it was both an incredibly good idea and smart to show just how sad it actually is to be Spider-Man. Much like the second movie forever ago Spider-Man doesn't usually get to be happy. Awful things happen to Peter and he never has enough time for anything because he's using his gift for the better good. To be Spider-Man is to suffer.

Great scene! My personal favorite is him realizing theyre telling him he has to let his dad die, i was getting No Way Home vibes

What I loved about this scene is that it captures what Spider-man is at heart. He is an underdog hero who never gives up. He goes against unimaginable odds and just by his wits, and grit wins. He cares about everyone and is willing to risk the entire timeline to save one person. Even his plan surprises the audience who knows Miles's abilities. He doesn't go camouflage when running to lure them out, and he doesn't use his electric powers until he fights the only Spiderman who uses an electric-based costume. His plan worked perfectly and it's because people underestimate him. That's the pure definition of being Spider-Man.

I remember the scene where Miguel explains the Cannon Events there is a very unsettling, creepy, cosmic atmosphere. I recently finished reading the Three Body Problem, and this feeling of helplessness against the greater universe carried over for me. Such a beautiful movie. I don't think it's a perfect film, I think most of it will be amplified when they stick the landing in the next one. But the missteps this one makes are so goddamn insignificant compared to the unimaginable and downright unprecedented highs, that Across the Spider Verse is a fuckin masterpiece thru and thru

Spider-verse goes to show if you focus on character, you'll have a good film. You could interchange the plot for anything, just give the audience interesting characters.

When Miles gets away during the chase, the main thought I had was the first movie. When Miles remembers what his uncle told him "you're the best of us Miles you're on your way". Getting away from Miguel and all the other spider people showed that. Out of all these other spider people with high tech smarter than him some with greater abilities than Miles, he out smarted them all and got away. In that moment he was the best Spiderman. And he did it his own way, that being the realization Miles can make it doing it his way doing his own thing.

Fun fact! The spider woman with the crutches is Charlotte Webber aka Sun Spider. She is actually a fanmade spider person who made it into an issue along side a few others after the first movie came out

I love how "bleeding from his armpits" came up twice, in a film with 1000 different ridiculous suits, his is overly criticized and it's hilarious, but I didn't like his foot shattering a tiny bit of glass like his hands did in the 1st, kinda takes away from the 1st, but an absolutely amazing piece of work.

0:06 It was definitely a huge MILES-tone, both in terms of the visuals and the AMAZING storytelling

Miguel is very clearly projecting on to miles, bc of his past and everything. Also i love that miles followed his gut. Who is Miguel to say that everything that happened was not supposed to happen?
