How to become a Mechanic without School? | Universal Technical Institute UTI Review from Shop Owner

Do you need to go to school to become an automotive technician?

I immediately started working as a mechanic after graduation. Some people go to a vocational or technology school to learn about automotive repair once they graduate from high school, but I went straight into fixing cars because I already knew a lot about them.

I knew the owner of the garage, so it wasn’t a problem to get a job there after graduation. I gradually got more hours as I worked longer and proved my skills. If I could go back, I might have gotten a certification in diesel repair – working on big trucks earns more money than regular cars.

One time I installed a transmission backwards on a foreign car and it completely destroyed the drive train. It was an expensive repair and required an extra two weeks to fix. I was pretty embarrassed that day.

I once had someone offer to pay for repairs in cookies and pies! She was a very sweet older woman who lived on a fixed income. She needed a relatively minor repair, so we donated the labor for free. It really helped her out in a tight spot.

I enjoy working with my hands and helping people keep their cars in excellent condition. I feel good when I solve difficult problems with cars, like finding something wrong that other mechanics had overlooked.

Customers can be extremely demanding sometimes. We occasionally have people bring in cars for service then insist we broke something in the car during repairs. They are usually just trying to scare us into providing free service.

My job is not very stressful. We take our time and try to do a good job on every repair. I maintain a healthy work-life balance.

I make about $63,000 per year. I think I am paid enough, and I feel so thankful to have that salary without a college degree.

Be prepared to work few hours at a garage when you first start. My first few years of work were a steep learning curve, and only after I proved myself did I start getting better hours.

I would like to buy the garage and run it myself. I haven’t done it yet because the machinery and parts are so expensive, but I would love to own my own business.

For those who are looking for mechnic stuff without school....
10 years ago I walked into my local marine repair shop and asked the manager if I could volunteer there a few days and clean the shop and do some basic things if they would teach me about being a boat mechanic. 2 weeks later he was letting me to standard maintenance with a mechanic watching me and after a month they offered me a position being an "intern" where I just did the oil changes and cleaning motors and helping the mechnics out. Now I'm a full time mechanic and do everything under the sun!
An education means a lot to people NOT in this world, experience and a WILLINGNESS TO WORK and ATTITUDE TO WORKING speaks far louder than any mechanics degree. It's a lot like Doctors, all that schooling didn't help you if you can't save anyone

I’m 18 and start my first mechanic job tomorrow. Hearing the guy say that people like him want kids who are genuinely interested and want to work made me feel really good and confident because I’m really interested and excited

I never went to trade school or UTI. Worked at an America's Tire as a tire tech for 3 years.
Took a chance and applied to a luxury dealer nearby. A few months later, they call me and got hired as an apprentice. It's been 7 years since I've completed my apprenticeship. I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity the fixed ops director gave me and the mentor tech who showed me the ropes.
A good attitude and will to learn goes a long way.

You guys there is so much ways to get experience. Save your money and do your own basic maintenance. Go to the junk yards and take the cars apart. Do research about how a car works, how parts work. Then put it as skills on your resume. Get into a shop and start out scrubbing the floor. If you don't want to do all this to be a tech/mechanic maybe you should find something youre passionate about because if you really want this you are going to work on cars regardless of a job or not. I currently work PT at autozone it's a good place to get knowledge if you already know the basics because you learn products best for a car, oil, you change batteries, lights, and you learn all the parts of a car.

In 2006 I was hired at Penske fueling and washing trucks, then I had the opportunity to change oil and turn wrenches and then moved up to a tech 2 and was finally making good money after 10 years but I was driven to be better and I’ve worked with guys with degrees and they never worked out when the going got tough, it all comes down to how bad u want to succeed and always stay humble.

I've been a car girl for my whole life. My dad's a big car guy so he got me into that...for a while I was all about the exterior. The glitz and glam and sleek designs. I designed my own concept cars and even sent some designs to major car companies when I was in middle school in the mid 2000s. Now I'm almost 27 and I'm enrolling myself in Penn Foster online automotive school. People are calling it a toilet paper degree....I'm calling it a first step forward.

As I've matured, I've fallen in love with the complexity and simultaneous simplicity of engines. I've fallen in love with computers and the brilliant minds behind them. And I've never wanted anything more than to speak the language of the vehicle...I started teaching mechanics to myself on my own, so school is a breeze. All I can say is...I'm happy to be following my heart. People always discouraged me, telling me shops wouldn't hire a female. Let me show up and fix something major and let them see my skill.

I was slowly getting more and more doubtful about how I'm going to get into the mechanical field but this video really made me continue to want to pursue it. I'm so glad I'm the type of guy he'd prefer. see you all in a couple years when I'm hopefully working as a mechanic :)

Bless God, the best training I've recieved is from a job. Like this man says if your kind and willing, people will show you how to do it.

The experience you gain from working meny jobs in say 5 years is far far greater than having one job believe me the variety of information rather than 1 set way of thinking and no initiative just wait around to be ordered

I like that old school attitude. Resumes don't matter. Hire a guy, give him a chance and if he doesn't know his stuff he's gone. The proof is in the work!

These days it's usually resumes (credentials) and buddies first.

This is so encouraging! I would apply to your shop if I was local!
