IS IT REALISTIC TO GET A YEARS WORTH OF FOOD STORAGE?

Because it is overwhelming to think about obtaining a years worth of food storage, I chose to focus on just a few things. If I focus on it one step at a time it becomes a little less daunting.

🇦🇺Remember to label everything and date it. It makes it easy to see how quickly you use something.

I used to get honey in 5 gallon container, with pour spout. I would transfer to one gallon glass jars. I go through a lot of honey also & use it for everything.

Next time just fill one jar and leave the rest in the bucket. Refill when needed. Use the other jars for your dry goods.😃

I use those same mylar bags and they can be sealed with your iron quite easily and well.

For plastic buckets our local thrift store gets cleaned 3 gallon frosting buckets and 1 gallon muffin mix buckets. These are awesome to store packets of Stevia etc, TVP, home dehydrated potato shreds, au gratin and instant mashed potatoes and so many other dry goods. We get them for 50 cents to $1.50. A local bar donates specialty coffee drink jars which are great for bulk spices, tea bags, dried fruits etc. I always look for deli size pickle jars for fermenting my own ACV.

We get a big bucket of honey from our local beekeeper as well, and I fill one jar which I just refill when it empties. I love purchasing in the larger buckets in general because when you're done with what you got, you have a food grade bucket you can use for other things. Anyway, thanks for the video! I've had that crackle trying to close a gamma lid on a too-full bucket before, too! LOL! Like just shake it! It will fit! 🤣

A trick to keep glass jars from breaking is to put them back into the cartons they came out of and store them that way.

Much easier to refill an empty jar when used as opposed to filling them all at one time. (BTW, I hope they all were pre-washed in D/W!) A lightly oiled cup keeps honey from sticking. It's refreshing to see concern about food! Keep storing!

For storing grains and beans, make sure you put dry ice inside to so keep the pests away.

To get the best seal I use hot water to expand the gamma lid ring and soften the plastic. Then quickly hammer it on using a piece of 2x4 to prevent damage as I use the hammer. Then wipe it out and let it air dry before filling.

Turn on teakettle to boil water. Turn ring upside down in a sink. After letting the teakettle come to a boil pour into the rim of the ring and use tongs to grab it, empty it, and place on bucket to hammer down.

Today I canned 6 pints of chicken stock. Not a lot, but enough from the roast chicken that I got a lot of meat from. My hubby is going to order me a freeze dryer. My daughter in laws will love it!! Freeze drying all of the things : ) How many kidlets do you have? We raised 6. Five boys then a girl : )

Oh, I felt for you when you started to scoop out that honey! That must have taken you hours to portion it out into jars. And I know what a sticky mess 5 gallons of honey can make. Next time, see if you can buy honey in a bucket that has a spigot at the bottom. Or ask your beekeeper if he/she will fill your jars for you. Or even make your own spigot bucket (pretty easy to do) and see if they will fill it.

FYI- honey flows best at about 90F so try to work with the honey on a hot day, or heat up the bucket someplace like in a sink of hot water, or in a vehicle on a sunny day before pouring.

I have not been able to find the big jars...the half gallon ones that you put the honey, rice etc. in. You are lucky.

I live in a 4 room farmhouse which is 320 square feet. I made room as I was filling up my food storage and creating plans for different emergency situations.

Beck in December 2021, I fell and my life fell apart. I spent most of 2022 recovering.

On all 5 gallon bucket lids, look for a rubber ring seal otherwise they leak. I tried Gamma Lids that did not have the rubber seal and it leaked. The rubber ring creates a tight seal.

I came up with my list of low cost meals using only shelf stable ingredients. I have meals that I can easily make from food storage to last over 3 years. That equals over 2, 000, 000 calories as I vary from 1800 to 2000 calories every day.

I have some mix and match meals in my system. Considering that there would have been no food for me during the last year if I did not have my food storage, it was worth it for me.

There is a tornado warning tonight so I might have to use some of my emergency supplies really soon.

Try dipping the cup in flour first as it stops the sticky factor

🇦🇺You can buy mason jar silicone protectors, but not sure what sizes they make.
