Would have been a good idea to tell the watcher to install build-essential before the configure step....

OK, I'm following the tutorial and after extracting the python and running ./configure you tell me to install build-essential first. I have not ran 'make' or 'make altinstall' yet. How do I back out of this and start again on the install? Can I just delete the directories and start again? Thanks

Thanks, that's really useful.  Also I found that on Linux Mint you can install Python 2 & 3 from the package repository, and then invoke Python 2 using ~ $ python, and Python 3 using ~ $ python3, but it's good to know how to install various alternative versions.  Good stuff.

Sir, it shows an error while running "sudo make altinstall". Also, it shows ZipImportError: can't decompress data: zlib not available..all the other commands ran completely..

It helps me a lot. But each time I type python on the terminal, it always shows python 2.7version but not 3.x version. Can someone tell me the reason? I have already installed the 3.x version on my ubuntu.
