I could never understand why the developers didn’t just update the house to a reasonable affordable one.

My husband's aunt applied for this show and was devastated when they didn't get picked because she felt like it was her family's only hope at the time. Thankfully she turned it around and her family is thriving today. I honestly don't know where they would all be if they had gotten picked for this. 😮

I used to watch Extreme Makeover religiously. I remember about a decade ago people calling it out for what it was. It's sad that they decided to build mansions for these people instead of something sustainable for the everyday man.

Dear friends of mine were on that show for their daughter "Boey" who had cancer. The bills were so overwhelming for them that they could barely keep up with the heat and electricity alone. Their daughter passed away a year into living in the new house and they had to sell everything that was gifted to them inside of the home as well as the house after because it was too much money. It was a

My dad was a news anchor/reporter, and I remember us going to film one of these sites for the debut of the home “Move that Bus” moment. My dad was telling me how the people who are receiving these homes were going to eventually lose them because of the property taxes/not being able to afford them.

It’s crazy to look back now, 22 years later, and I see this YouTube post of yours.

My grandpa told me when I was young, 'The way you get it is the way you lose it. If it comes quickly or by way of dishonesty or shortcuts, that's how you will lose it. Anything worth having is worth working and waiting for.' I believe him.

Sorry, but can we talk about how the government was a LARGE part of the problem for almost all of these families? Can’t afford property taxes anymore because the house got bigger - the house that the government didn’t pay for, and doesn’t pay to maintain?? Not enough people talk about how the government is the supervillain in so many stories.

There is absolutely NO REASON to take a 900sqft home and turn it into a gigantic mansion like that for someone who is low income. I get that they are trying to have a wow factor for the show but they could still build them a beautiful home that they can all fit in, that they can actually afford.

The one about the kids getting kicked out is just heart breaking.

As a little kid, I remember living in our mold-filled, flea-infested house with sheets for doors in the early 2000s and watching this show. I prayed that Ty would show up and save us. I'm so happy he never did.

Fun fact: unaffordable housing is the 1# cause for homelessness, which leads to mental illness, which leads to drug addiction. Easily fixable with basic regulations.

*I would imagine these financial setbacks could have easily been avoided if the TV network simply had a discussion with the homeowners about their finances & limitations!* 🤷🏽‍♀️

Almost each family has a similar concern - They all struggled with feeling like they were letting down the volunteers. Not only are families losing homes, they’re feeling tremendous emotional distress and guilt towards people they probably see regularly in their own communities. If that’s not stressful, I don’t know what stress is.

My family sent in a VHS tape to "audition" for this show. A family from our town was actually asked to be on the show and they denied the opportunity. I'm so glad we were never asked and the family in our town turned them down. Their house was very small and run down and always stayed that way. Allegedly they denied the "makeover" because they wouldn't be able to afford the taxes on it afterward! I'm glad they didn't have to go through the things these families did. I pray for these families! 😢

The fact that it would only cost the U.S.about 40 billion to solve homelessness in America… While we send hundreds of billions overseas…

I work in construction project management; I started out in remodeling when I was in the beginning of my career and shows like this and other ones on HGTV would give my clients a very unrealistic timeline in their own mind. They would assume that I’d have my crew out there on Christmas Eve to work on their outdoor kitchens, or that their kitchen remodel would be done in 3 days. I have a love/hate relationship with HGTV because of this. 😅

My hubby worked on this show for a home in Florida and he was so unimpressed by Ty. Said he only worked when the camera was on him, and stayed in his trailer most of the time.
I remember the first few episodes they actually just improved the existing home and then they started just knocking them down n building huge obnoxious ones. It was more entertaining the old way.
