So, one of the main attractions, for me, is how you unintentionally made me aware of a lot of bad habits that were a big driving force behind me taking a break from music learning that I see will be really easy to fix, now that I am aware of them. That got me thinking, what if you made a video dedicated to all the pitfalls we all fall victim to on our journey? In particular the kind of bad habits that live in blindspots. The ones that cost way more time and energy than the situation warants. The kind you don't realise are a problem because you lack the understanding to identify them as problematic. The ones that remain untill someone nonchalantly pointed out a diferent approach and the realisation of just how much time and effort has been wasted hits you like a wet blanket a few ms before the "oh of course!" hits you and you can start picturing just how much time and effort this little piece of trivia is going to save you moving forward.

There certainly are a lot of compression tutorials out there, but some of the most popular channels out there are personalities who aren't necessarily good at teaching so much as they are good at making engaging content. You teach well.

I've seen a lot of people saying lately attack times on compression should generally be super slow which makes NO sense to me, but they never explain WHY.

Just one example.

So yes, please do an episode. Even if only to explain when to use Ableton's "Compressor" & when to use the "Glue Compressor", how they're different, the strengths & weaknesses of each.

Great video! For stock Ableton I prefer the Shaper plugin over LFO, personally (still mapped to Utility gain). It's basically the same thing, just more flexible/easier to use, letting you draw the exact shape/envelope you want like Xfer's LFO Tool and the M4L plugin you shared. Another tip for anyone reading this: after you setup your sidechain effect with Shaper (or LFO) and Utility, put them in an Audio Effects Rack (just select both plugins and press Command+G) and save the rack as a preset so you never have to build it again (you can just drag the rack into your user library on the left panel in Ableton to save it). You could also map one of the rack's macros to shaper's depth and offset parameters to make a dry/wet knob (If I remember right, you might also need to adjust the min/max values for both parameter in the Macro mapping menu to make it work right).

You have a unique way of describing issues - that other's simply do not. When I hear you say something similar to what someone else may have also said - I seem to feel you more, easier, makes sense to me... So - Please - do a video on compression! I get confused by the myriad of tutorial's I have checked out on compression, eq, etc... I like your ability to get the point across - simply and "to the point"... which is my point!!! Perhaps not so specific to Abelton tho - (I use Studio 1)... I'm sure there are many others who watch you, who are using different DAWs as well... TY! Subbed!...

Nice tutorial. Thumbs up!
Since I've started using Ableton, I'm using a simple click track set to "sends only" that works as the source for the stock compressor in Ableton. The length of the signal is less than 1/16 which gives you the possibility to use longer kick signals. And since you set the click track (In my case a simple "Tick Hit" sample), you won't be able to hear the click.

Nice tuto as usual 🙂 I'd like more about synth sound design and mixing lead and keys, however keep up the good stuff 🖤

Recently started viewing your guides and they are really inspiring and concise. I currently use Studio One, as opposed to Ableton, so if you have the time, maybe you could incorporate the same effects, using paid plugins, just to help. Either way, good to see your workflow. Thanks.

How do we get the Max item into Live? The packs installer doesn’t recognize it as a valid file type.

What perfect timing! I was JUST working on kick/sub sidechain last week trying to stick with Ableton's and just couldn't get it dialed. Gonna give Cartessian a shot as well as some of the vintage plug-ins. I have a ton of them but never use them b/c Ozone and Ableton compressors usually do the job. This particular groove/freq. though I've been fighting.

4:00 why wouldn't you use Shaper instead of LFO, or even better - MIDI Shaper???

Also, why there's no link to that LFO device?

Thanks Philip! As for your question... have you delved into any other genres besides Techno/House stuff? I've been looking a bit more into some of the newer styles that implement trap type beats, such as Wave/Hardwave, heck even some variants of Phonk. Its an interesting style. I lean more towards Trance, but find some of newer stuff implementing similar trance sounds, as well as trance arps. I bring up trap beats, because the kicks are not in your normal quarter note spots, whereas you do need to sidechain, with the kick track. Oddly sometimes it still sounds good with a 16th/8th note duck at every 1/4. There is also another M4L device called DuckBuddy, that I like using sometimes.
