I've started most of my screenplays by writing down the key moment that sparked the idea in the first place. Sometimes, it's at the beginning of the story where the character is thrown into conflict that gets them off their ass. And sometimes it's about the moment when the story ends, the climax.

- Figure out the idea you are trying to convey.
- Outline
- Don't be boring
- Dive into the unknown
- Enjoy the magic when it all flows out of thin air

Once the honeymoon phase ends, the commitment phase kicks in. 😉

Like she said, I start with a mind dump but I try to connect them like word association (it looks like; character > wants this > its over here > cant get it because of X > resents X > etc).

Love this. Maybe, in a nutshell, "What Do You Do When You Don't Know How To Start?"

The Answer's in the Question (as it often is) - "Do". It's all about doing - action, not thinking ;)

Love this! It's like setting out all the cake ingredients (plus a few random spices) before you start cookin'!

Pick a scene you have in your movie, it's doesn't matter if it's in the middle or end. Ask yourself how do I get there, what happens after that. Why is this scene important. Most important is to accept you will writers block when you start to write. Take your time.

One thing that really helps me is to outline key plot points such as Inciting Incident, Midpoint etc! And then filling in the blanks. I work better with structure and knowing the end in mind 😅

Come up with an interesting idea. Mull it over in your head for a while. A way to start will appear. Then start writing the story in Word. Describe characters loosely and just keep going until you get to the end... Maybe 4 to 10 pages. Then read your plan. Chop and change things. Start linking things together. Add ideas for characterisation. Then finally start writing the first draft. With my latest script i had the idea ten years ago. Then I found some time and motivation to write it and did the story draft in about a week at a leisurely pace. Then I wrote the script in about two weeks. Then I spent about six weeks editing and polishing. 4 drafts in total.

I have started my story with a proper bullet points of outline... So wish me luck ;)

Ok, I’m glad she said this. I’m reading Story By Numbers from Adam Skelter and he calls it an Idea Inventory. To write everything down, EVERYTHING, so that when you sit down to do your outline (24 plot points in Story By Numbers and I think 15 beats if you’re using Save The Cat) you’ll have most of not all of the places to begin the first draft (which will be crap and that’s what editing and rewrites are for). I think it took around 3 years for George Lucas to arrive at the final draft for A New Hope. Just think about that. 3 years. Omfg you guys. But it turned out alright for him, so the 3 years was worth it lol. Keep writing everyone. I’m still figuring it out, too.

Here's my problem. I wrote a feature screenplay, but before l spend money to enter it in a competition or something, i just want it read by someone who knows about screenplays. I live in Cape Town South Africa and I'm finding it very difficult to show this to someone... please, please help.

Agreeing and disagreeing. Start with a character and a setting. After that go to where you want that character to end up. Doesn’t matter if good or bad or if it’s the hero or the villain.

Then outline the crap of the whole shebang and you and that character will meet other ones in the way that will show you the path to the end.

(Oh. And don’t write chronologically. If your outline/goal is set, you can jump front and back depending on which scene that it inspires you the most at that moment).

Waste of time doing that. Just create a logline and a synopsis and start planning. Find the projection within the logline and synopsis and away you go. Unfortunately there is no easy fix here. That takes many goes and practice. You shouldn't have to do any extra work, like she's saying. It's just getting it down, getting it done and wash, rinse and repeat. It's amazing how much you can shortcut but one thing you can't shortcut is you have to (unless a genius) just keep planning and writing.

Blake Snyder says you shouldn't start a screenplay without the title and the logline
