Three Pillars Of Speed Development

One question you may be asking yourself a lot is – How do I get faster?🏎️💨

It is by far the most sort after performance characteristic by any athlete.

And rightly so - speed is an absolute killer on the field. It is often the difference between getting to that loose ball and winning the contest for your team or not getting there in time and causing a turnover.

Being a faster athlete allows you more time to make better decisions and execute your skills more effectively.

So, how do you improve your speed?

At Ludus, we break it down into 3 Pillars ⏩⏩⏩

Pillar number 1 is Projection 👟

Projection is your ability to project yourself in the direction you want to run in. I.e., break out of a tackle or explode into space.

One of the main exercises we use to develop projection is the Sled March.

It gets you into a good horizontal position and allows you to push hard down and back into the ground effectively.

Pillar number 2 is Reactivity ♨️

How often have you misses a ball or play, and thought if only I had an extra second I could have gotten there?

This is reactivity.

Your ability to react quickly off the ground is reliant on the stiffness of your Achilles tendon.

Think of a hard ball bouncing on the ground verses a soft ball.

The hard ball hits the ground and quickly springs up, while the soft ball spends longer on the ground and doesn’t bounce as high.

Our go to exercise for developing ankle and Achilles tendon stiffness is the Pogo Jump.

A well-executed pogo jump with high toes and quick ground contacts is very similar to the springiness needed during sprinting.

Pillar number 3 is Switching ✂️

Switching is the ability to change your legs fast in the air.

Think of this like a scissor action; you want the foot behind you moving forward and the leg in front of you moving backward as quickly as possible.

Switching is tricky because it’s not just about speed it’s also about timing and co-ordination.

That’s why we use Wall Drill exercises to help teach our athletes how to effectively switch their limbs.

Speed training is often made too complicated. It can be hard to know where to start, what drills you need, and what prescription will fit you best.
