People should also know the amaizng history of these dogs!! Truly a part of Canadian history. When settlers began settling, the Newf was there, when explorers traversed the arctic, Newfs were there dodging polar bears, when we pushed west to found British Columbia, the Newf was right there, in Hong Kong during WW2 when Canadians engaged in land combat for the first time, a Newf was not only a soldier but a Sergeant and he was named Gander. Gander helped defend 3 waves of Japanese troops, on the 4th a grenade would fall in the foxhole of 7 men, and 1 dog would grab that grenade and run off towards the Japanese. Sergeant Gander is commemorated on the wall of fallen soldiers in Ottawa. God bless these amazing, loyal, dogs.

I got my first Newf last October. Ichinojo (a Landseer) is now 6 months old and he already drools enough to fill a bathtub!

Keep a roll of paper towels with you at all times. They were bred for cooler climates. Where they come from, summer is 4 months long at the most.

I love Newfs! I had 2 sisters, Niamh was 14yrs & Nuala was 13yrs before I helped them over the rainbow bridge. Broke my heart but I was blessed to have had them in my life for so long. Best wishes to those who are lucky enough to share your life with this incredible breed!
Good video for anyone thinking about adopting this breed and other large breed dogs.

I am on owning my third Newfie and each one is different. You are so right about the drool. One can be more of a drooler than another. The best thing is to get insurance right away when you get a Newfie as a puppy. So right about the grooming. My first 2 newfie got groomed, my 3rd one can't go to the groomer, so I am enjoying grooming him. Don't forget to tell people about the shedding and always stress that if a person is a clean freak, they shouldn't own a Newf. You have to have some give. Enjoyed your video.

The way that tree glistens and sways in the background is nothing short of surreal.

Good advice. I have a Newf pup Sylvie 6 months old, a gray. She is Newfoundland #5 for me. I never had two at a time because there is only room for one in the truck. I love them.

Great advice. Thank you.
My mother added two Newfies (male & female) when her two eldest children (myself & my younger brother) grew up and left home. My younger brother & sister (12 & 14 years younger) than I am benefited from the Newfie family additions through their youth & college years. This occurred from 50 to 37 years ago. Both the Newfies and my late mother & father have moved on in their journeys; but their sweet memories remain.

I am reminded by Mark Twain and his affection for dogs:

Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven not man's.

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man.

Yes, newfie's drool & vet bills ...everything else is a minor inconvenience. Study Newfies before adopting them, so you may feel assured your family will enjoy and adjust to them. The friendship, support, and loyalty + safety and an extra "nanny" watching out for you and for your family is reason enough to enjoy the companionship of a Newfi. Anytime we went swimming the Newfies would swim out to us and in their gentle but insistent manor firmly guide us back onto shore. They didn't like us swimming in water deeper than we could stand up in.

Space and shedding? Give your Newfi a dog bed to sleep in and a weekly or 2x a week grooming (brushing) and he or she will reward you with uncommon good looks and loyalty. Carry a sponge with you and wipe off the drool that Newfies sling hither and yon... walls, rugs, furniture, and clothes. They leave no surface untouched. I always thought of it as a Newfi-sized damp kiss. Miraculously, their drool never left a stain if we wiped it up promptly.

Topsail Nautilus & Nellie Bell were best friends with one another and the rest of the family. I really enjoyed visiting the parents and younger sibs. But, frankly, treasured the time the Newfies and I spent together running around the yard, going for long walks & runs, and swimming. Yes, they are super water dogs. Fortunately, they lived near the seashore in Massachusetts and enjoyed the ocean more than smaller lakes, streams, or puddles.
Upside: They both would jump into the water and swim out and "rescue" anyone they could see. All one had to do was grasp their collar or hug their neck and either dog would tow the human to shore. They appeared to learn that behavior without any human coaxing. Even in the dead of winter with ice floating around, they'd jump in the icy water and enjoy swimming around by themselves. Observing a Newfi laying out on snow in subfreezing temperatures and rising sometime later with the snow underneath them still unmelted provided an indication of their safely insulated layers of hair. Newfies seemed to adjust to the cold weather as well as they adjusted to the summer heat.
Downside: After swimming, their wet outer coats held some water. To avoid a large puddle in the car, we took a short walk after the swim and let the Newfies shake off the water. That was a sight in itself. After entering the car, they left small puddles of water on the floor where they sat down and rested on the way home. But, sharing their enjoyment was always worth the cleanup later.
I've never experienced such a calm, loving, gentle dog who exhibited such quiet, insight, and tolerance of our human behavior. They were even patient when meals might be delayed. They were easy to train and appeared to enjoy it thoroughly.

Adopting a Newfi into your family is not a trivial event. With some adjustments as one would make for any additional family member, the benefits are enormous and gratifying.

Thank you for this video and sharing the realities! Many people do not consider the breed specific needs. You mentioned 5 days stay at an ER vet, and I was bracing for the amount... where I live, one night for a cat was $2500. 🥴 Your pups are beautiful!

Any other animal drooling like that would be gross...when newfies do it, it's just cute. :D

Beautiful dogs. They really are.

I grew up with one like him, my grandparents dog. One of the best dogs you could have. He was really my grandfathers dog. The funny thing is he was scared of the upright vacuum box so we put it on the stairs and he never came up to our bedrooms. When I came downstairs early I would catch him belly up on the lounge and he wasn’t allowed up there but I never told anyone 😂😂Very good guard dog cos everyone was scared of him even the mailman and double looked back while he sat in the passenger seat haha but he wouldn’t hurt anyone unless he laid on you haha. Yes the slob is literally everywhere and his hair. Best children’s dog ever. My grandparents when they moved to a small flat they donated her to a farm who had a special needs child and he was very happy there. His name was Gatsby with a bit of white on the chest. My family had a old English sheepdog and was the love of my dad’s life too, similar personality to a Newfoundland too.
