I took a Chicken keeping class from a fantastic farmer, and her numbers were quite different, one square foot of chicken coop per bird plus one and a half square feet per chicken in the run. Anything bigger than that is spacious.

Bob’s Burgers has taught me one thing: The pecking order is not to be messed with. Lol

Bless you!!!! ❤ There's a house in my neighborhood with a front-yard homemade coop made entirely of corrugated metal on all sides, with NO ventilation visible except for the opening underneath (also not visible). I told the "lady" of the house that she would cook her chickens on the hotter months in this veritable oven. She was incensed, told me I was wrong, and demanded I leave. I sent a picture of the coop and verified my opinion with an expert. I think you would be horrified if you saw this coop. 😢

I have been raising chickens for over twenty years now. With the forceful removal of an angry rooster, I now have a small flock of 7 chickens. Strangely, this is the first time I have had a flock without a "pecking-order". They free range over 5 rich acres. With an abundance of food, there is no need for a hierarchy. Very, very happy chooks.

There is a town in Belgium that has offered its citizens free chickens to cut down on waste. The chickens eat all the table scraps that would otherwise go to landfill.

Had multiple chickens when I was a child...we used to let them roam around and used to call them back at evening into their homes... their favourite places were tree branches and used to only lay eggs at the house of our neighbours 🙄

My chickens lived in a cardboard box sitting on an old washing machine in the corner in the back yard.. i stuck two sticks in the side and a couple in the corners to prop up the box. Covered it with a tarp so it doesnt get wet and threw some dried grass on the bottom. They also had a smaller box with some dried grass right next to it for laying eggs.

They were happy and healthy. I had 11 of them and on average had 7 eggs a day with dark yellow yolks. They came out when they wanted and roamed my back yard.

It wasnt ideal but it worked for the many years i had them.

We had a couple hundred chickens on the farm..a coop, a roosting area, egg laying stalls, birds ran free during the day outside and closed the coop at night. Standard stuff. Chicks were raised in an enclosure till juveniles and could fend for themselves..etx

My largest (Lavender Orpington) is the on the bottom of the pecking order and my smallest (Easter egger) is on the top of the pecking order. Crazy how chickens work

And no matter how many boxes or chickens you have, they will ALL lay all of their eggs in the same 1-3 boxes. Without fail.

For ten or so years we’ve kept about a dozen chickens. We’ve found that a good dominant rooster keeps the hens from picking on each other. Also the breed really makes a difference - buff Orpingtons are by far our favorite breed. Just saying.

Yes start with three, because in three months, you’ll have 41 hens, 3 roosters and maybe a half dozen guineas.
