Aged To Perfection, Or Past Its Prime? | 2023 Chevrolet Equinox

Since Chevy launched the third-gen Equinox back in 2018 nearly every competitor has had a clean-sheet redesign, so where does that put one of Chevy's most popular models? Especially now that Chevy has cut the engine lineup and a new model is around the corner. In a nutshell, the Chevy is focusing on affordability.

With leases as low as $199, low-interest financing, and cash off-offers, the Equinox is targeting shoppers looking for a deal, but there are still solid reasons for the rest of us to check it out. the 1.5L turbo has solid performance, fuel economy is reasonable, it's proven to be reliable and the handling and braking performance is sharp. On the other hand, it hasn't aged as well as Mazda's CX-5...

The equinox didn’t feel particularly modern when it was new. Well past it’s prime and relegated to rental parking lots.

It's not a bad option if you're on a budget but the refresh will be more than welcome.

What everybody here in the comments doesn't realize is that here in Michigan almost everyone has a Equinox or knows somebody that does. So thanks for the well done and excellent review of one of the most affordable and easy to find parts for a SUV on the market. (FYI we still have a ton of Pontiac Aztecs on the road in Michigan as well 😂)

Definitely past it's prime, desperately in need of a redesign

I'm a Ford girl but I think the Equinox looks better than the Escape in their current generations.

So you noted that the seats feel "small" and for some, that's perfect. The Equinox will always have a special place in my heart because at 5'5", the cockpit feels like it was made for me. The seats hug me perfectly and, most notably, I can actually reach the armrests.

It's kinda misleading to say this is one of Chevy's 'most popular models.' That should probably be clarified to 'Chevy's most popular model for rental fleets and corporate fleets.'

The Car Wizard would probably say that this car has been around for 18 years too long.
(Since 2005, the 1st model year)

One thing that you reviewers need to remember is that a lot of your viewers, possibly most of them, do not look at new cars every year. I'll give you an example: I haven't seen the inside of a new GM vehicle for years, so I would have no idea that a dashboard design is "old GM, " or old anything, for that matter. I think it is questionable to declare a vehicle's design "dated" in various ways repeatedly throughout the review. Personally, I like the design of the Equinox, and essentially, you are telling me over and over again that I have poor, unsophisticated, outdated taste.

The thing is, as a long time Alex fan, I'm sure that you really don't want people to feel that way. People can see a vehicle's design for themselves and decide, for themselves, if it attractive or not.

I think it would be appropriate to make the viewer aware that there will soon be a redesign, and if they find this current model less than attractive, they can wait and see the new one, which will have Chevy's new design language, similar to (list the models that use it).

Anyway, enough of that. Your evaluation of the ergonomics is super helpful! As you have said, you are an average sized guy, and knowing that, if the seats feel small to you, they will feel really small to many of us American behemoths! Your assessment of the dashboard controls is also helpful, for those of us who are not comfortable trying to touch computer screens while in a moving vehicle it was good to find that most controls are traditional knobs and buttons.

Overall, I want you to know that you did a good job on this review, and I appreciate the information I received, and your delivery of it. Thank you!

The 6 spd automatic is a no for me dawg. Terrain has a 9 spd, why not the equinox?

6:45 The spare is under that part with the round markings

Boring in every way, same as the Escape, but they sell loads of them for a reason. Reasonably priced and doesn't do anything terribly.

This thing look dated when it was brand new. Now, it's a really tired looking design (both inside and out). Is probably pretty reliable, though, as they've had several years to work out the bugs. This is a car you buy on value and utility, not on desire.

Never thought this was an attractive offering

Wish they sticked to 2.0L turbo! With that equinox becomes a beast! When I test drove in 2016 I was mind blown. Everything changed now! In 2023 my test drive was very refined and lacked all sporty pickup even though size has been reduced! 1.5L is good not the best considering the performance of same 1.5L in Honda crv!

My sister-in-law has a nicely-optioned redline edition, but it's all wasted on her because she doesn't use/doesn't know how to use the options available.

You can't change that.

I think you wanted to not like this vehicle but ended up liking it more than you expected. It has almost all the tech you'll need- most competitors do not have a 360 camera view. A lot do not have a pano sunroof. A bigger screen does not equal better. The controls are very easy to use without being on the screen or having haptic feedback buttons. If someone buys one- or leases- or rents at the airport- they know it isn't a hybrid. They could get a different vehicle. Not all Rav 4 owners get the hybrid model.

The EquinoxEV is due this year and the ICE Equinox is due next year, so...

The design of the newest ICE version looks good from the front, but the interior is lackluster. The new Equinox EV looks great, but they made a bad decision to not make an ICE variant (or possible hybrid).
