Eddsworld's Character Design is Secretly Genius

On August 1st 2020, we saw the first Eddsworld animation in more than four years. And everybody loved it.

But why? Why do people love this show as much as they do? There are many reasons of course. But the most important reason, in my humble opinion, is the characters.

This is why you love them so much.

He has a red hoodie, which is a color commonly seen with punk or other rule breaking personalities. He also has black pants to go with that. He also has a bandage on his cheek and spiked up hair to show more of his edgy personality.

Okay everyone’s talking about “no one likes him” but oml EDWARDS PLANET got me so good

I feel like Tord actually changed quite alot from how he was in the early 2000's Eddisodes. Back then he was very quiet, reserved, and serious. Well, serious for a character in the Eddsworld universe. For that reason he was pretty mysterious; no one really knew too much about him. But in 2016 his personality did a complete 180. In The End, he's shown to be essentially the complete opposite of how he was in older Eddisodes- he became much more extroverted, talkative, warm, and humorous. I just find it so strange yet interesting how much his personality changed.

I think Tord is a highlight of how far Eddsworld has come. He’s always been the overly edgy, gun-toting maniac who would throw people under the bus for laughs. In the beginning, all the the characters had that to some extent.

But as Eddsworld grew, the main trio grew as characters. They all got their own lovable quirks and interactions with each other that elevated them as consistent characters rather than blank slates.

Tom’s the cynical one possessed by a rage demon with an insane heritage and sense of humor to match. Matt’s the idiotic brit who loves himself to a ridiculously funny degree, but occasionally has flashes of intelligence for puns and schemes. Edd’s the creative one who rarely takes anything seriously, and comes up with names for monsters just because, yet is still somehow the straight man most often.

They’re friends who bonded over the course of many adventures, having their own disagreements and arguments but never really separating.

Tord didn’t get that. Tord was always just the teenager who blew shit up. Fans and the main trio seem to think that he’s a friend, but he was never there for the friendship like the others were. He was just there for the adventures, and that was fine when everyone else was too, but then Eddsworld became as much about the characters as the adventures, and he stopped fitting in.

He left, and Eddsworld left him behind.

I initially found the 'No one likes him' joke on the eddsworld subreddit, and I thought it was so clever that, like all the best jokes, it was worth sharing with as many people as possible.

I remembered WAY BEFORE that Matt used to be the fairly quiet one and Tord was a bit more of a goof with the running gag for his love for weapons. I think when Matt received the purple hoodie, some more literal color was brought into his life (and vanity)

And there's also the theory that Tord in The End was actually a clone from Spares

Here's how I personally see Tord:
Tord is the quiet one. He's always dragged in Edds adventures but never complaints about it because it never really annoys him. He can be sarcastic and likes weapons and violence but stays calm almost all of the time until a fight shows up. Thats when he becomes the Trigger happy Tord we get to see from time to time when he doesnt hesitate to take out his weapons and attack his ennemies mercilessly.

Thats really sad that Tord left the series early I wouldve absolutely love to see his character being polished in his traits and defined personality..

But what can we say. What happened cant be undone.
... I really miss Tord. I hope he's okay now. Wherever he is..
