Reminder: Being consistent with the amount of hours you draw is better than drawing every once in a while for longer periods.

Drawing in a burst and feeling miserable after because you've been trying to muster enough motivation to get back to it and do it again is unhealthy and will probably make art harder for you.
Take care everyone, hope we can all improve

BIG ADVICE: Go between learning the fundamentals of drawing people (or other things) and drawing just for fun. Just working on art studies can be really depressing, so you must do fun drawings as well and try not to criticize yourself too much on those fun drawings (easier said than done). You can mix art studies and art creation /doodles for more effect.

Having a teacher like this would’ve been nice. Meanwhile my art teacher in my final and most obviously stressful year of school asked me why I even bothered coming to her class and spent the whole year insulting my effort. Yikes

James, you read my mind, i was so frustrated that i was happy with my results but not with the time that it took me to get to them, and it only got worse in this quarantine, comparing my times with pros, asking them, and feeling guilty when they replied me that a cool ass rendered piece took them a couple of hours, when that would take a couple of days.

this video reminded me of what art should be, fun, even tho i want to work in the industry, i should make my way there enjoyable, thank you for touching this type of content aside from the draftmenship ones

Thank you for this, I was really struggling lately with art, I couldn't bring myself to draw anything, every time I was in front of a white paper I felt too scared to draw even a lines because I didn't felt good enough, I wasn't able to bring my ideas to life. This video really helped <3

For learning anatomy, I believe it may be beneficial to learn the shapes of the skeleton and bones before starting with muscles.

I guess as a comic book artist I kind of have to learn everything. Perspective, anatomy, gesture, line technique, lighting, shape design and composition....oh god

I don't know if you necessarily need to "slow down". I'm sure you and everyone else here, heard about the story of the pottery teacher who told one half of their class that they need to focus on quality, and the other half they said they need to focus on quantity. In the end it showed the ones that made tons of clay pots ended up showing improvement in the quality, where as those that focused on quality hadn't finished even one. I don't know if this is a true story, but there's something to be said for doing lots of pieces as fast as possible, because your quality will eventually improve.

I greatly enjoyed this - a lot of good observations here, James.

For those of us who've been caught up in pride and social media's siren call; singing lies, this was a great video to unwind to.

I definitely need more practice on my fundamentals but unfortunately I just have no motivation to actually study them. I just want to make finished pieces, not studies. I think it stems primarily from falling into the social media pit of feeling like I have to be posting all the time. Pressuring myself to make art every week to post and never having time to just study the fundamentals. Might be a good idea to take a break soon...

✨ Welcome back! I've learned so much from your older videos. I've been improving greatly because of the tips you gave. ✨

I think the best thing I got from this video is that little chart. The fact that its a process that repeats itself is something I forget often times. I will learn a little of something and then once the cycle is complete I will realize that knowledge isn't enough and I will learn a little more. I think it's very important to remember this cycle to have a healthy mindset about art.

-You need a goal.
But what if I like everything? What if I like drawing characters as much as drawing landscapes and items. As much as I like sculpting things in 3d. What then? down into the pit of mediocrity?

Appreciating the chill out mix in the background.

EDIT: Video was great, definitely reminded me that I’ve slowly been losing creative process and need to get back on that horse.
