It is the first suit you find following the story. If you don't want to follow the story then about half the suits could qualify as first suits.

It's an old tradition to skip the Preston mission entirely until mid-game.

As you're approaching the location, make a save, just outside of rendering distance. If the set of armor isn't complete, reload the save. Repeat the process until it's as close to a full set as possible. You can do this with all power armor sets.

I hate how the fact if you accidentally go near a power armor location, and not pick it up, or even look at it for that matter, it locks into whatever power armor level range your currently at. Finding X-01 was hell on earth in my playthroughs since I like to explore rather than do main missions.

If you are facing the museum there’s a sniper rifle 3 houses down w ammo and a bed (if you’re on survival)

(Edit, I looked it up, and looked at the game files, there are textures for Rusty T-51, but from what I can tell, they are never used)

I found that suit at level 15 and it was literally just the frame with no armour ☠️

Actually it’s the power armor that Nate wears in the intro for fallout where he laughs as his comrade shoots a civilian

actually the first is in the water next to Sanctuary, a full set of raider power armor.

My dumb self already rushing to get all the power armor I can find at a low level before realizing power armor gets better depending on players levels 😅

I kid u not, my first playthru I ignored Preston and gang and just grabbed the mini gun and ignored the armour. Waited till the brotherhood accepted me because I reallt wanted power armour but had no idea what I was doing 😅

Just going to say it: t45 is better than t51

I prefer the one in concord. Its most likely to be the first encountered because all the friendly npcs and quests at the beginning point you to it. Its also the t45 which may be crap but its super cheap and easy to fix and upgrade.

I always wait until I'm done with the raider dlc before I grab my Preston... so i usually end up with an X01. 😅
