Yeras ago the IRS sent me a tax bill with penalties. The penalties were higher than the tax. My parents gifted me part of their home. The value was around $8500. I called a friend who worked for the IRS and she explained that a family member can gift another family member up to 10K tax free and gave me the code number. I sent them a letter explaining such, didn't hear a thing from them for a year. I called her again and asked if she would check on the status of the bill. She stated it was closed with no further action. Sure would have been nice if the person from the IRS who made the mistake would have followed up with a letter stating the case was closed.
