Ryan and Nathan react to The Grateful Dead's cover of The Dixie Cup's song, "Iko Iko". And if that title reminds of the song that was famous in the movie Rain Man, you are correct!

I had to smile when you guys said "wow that's a huge crowd" this is an AVERAGE crowd at a dead show since the early 70's. I was lucky enough to be at Watkins Glen raceway in upstate NY in 1973. That show had 600, 000 people, the largest concert in history according to Guiness book of world records. Look up "summer jam" with the dead, the allman brothers and the band.

Iko Iko is actually older then Dixie Cups. It's a folk song and the author is unknown.

just to help a little:

- this concert was 7/7/1989 in Philadelphia at the old JFK stadium. Immediately after this concert, JFK was condemned by city inspectors due to stadium deemed structurally unsafe and a potential fire hazard. The stadium had seating capacity of 102, 000 for an American football game. This specific concert has been immortalized in the DVD 'Crimson, White & Indigo".
- regarding the drummers, Bill Kreutzmann was the original drummer joining in 1965. Mickey Hart then joined in 1967 as a second drummer. Mickey left from 1971-1974 after his father embezzled large monies from the band. Mickey rejoined in late 1974 until the band folded in 1995 after Garcia's death
- Iko Iko was first played live by Grateful Dead on May 15, 1977. The band played this song 185 times between 1977-1995

The original song came out 12 years before the Dixie Cups version. They're just the first to really make it popular.

Iko Iko is a New Orleans staple. One of the Dixie Cups was a member of the Neville Family.

We thought Mickey Hart looked like Spock back then too. "This acid is not logical."

The band literally played hundreds of different songs over the years. Some more than others. And though they had close to 200 original songs their list of covers was probably in the 300's.

They played just about anything that resonated with them musically regardless of genre...country, Irish/Scottish traditional, rock...anything.

They always did it with respect, and were respected for it. They had a knack for adding their own twist while preserving and respecting the integrity of the song.

They play a LOT of Dylan regularly, and put out an album with him, of his songs, and had him tour with them as part of the band in the 80's.

This was a very hot day in July of 1989, I was there with my girlfriend, the crowd was huge. As noted below in the comments, JFK was a large, but run-down venue, there were at least 90-100, 000 folks at this show. JFK was, at the time, the largest permanent venue on the East Coast, and Grateful Dead filled it twice, this was their second and the last show ever at the old home of the Army-Navy football game. It was also the site of LiveAid in 1985, and many other memorable rock shows over the years.

We always took the slow jams as a time to sit shown and rest. Lol.

With this exception of the original formation of the band, they have always had two drummers. Bill Kreutzmann was the original drummer. Mickey Hart joined the band in 1967. Hart left the band in 1971 until basically 1976 after his father was caught embezzling from the band. The song He's Gone is based on Lenny.

Except for the very beginning and a few years in the early 70s, the Dead have always had those same two drummers.
