Nuclear power is a hot topic these days, following the explosions at Fukushima, Japan last year, and problems at San Onofre that have shut down the plant. KPBS reporter Alison St John visited General Atomics on Sorrento Mesa, where researchers are looking for better ways to generate nuclear power.

Jennex, being a nuclear engineer, should know that a Gieger counter is good for higher levels of contamination, but that trace contamination requires a more sensitive unit, like a scintillation counter or a solid state unit. (I agree with him otherwise).

This sounds like an interesting idea. The dangers are probably still there and the resulting isotopic mix from all of those new transient decay series caused by using fission products as a larger and larger basis for fuel, will make the waste products quite nasty.

I would guess they are using neutron capture to push long lived isotopes into short decay chains. That is a great idea, but very dangerous! Still, could be of wonderful use!!!
