Giles Udy is Britain’s leading historian of the Soviet Gulag system. He is author of the phenomenal ‘Labour and the Gulag: Russia and the Seduction of the British Left’ and is a regular contributor to The Times, The Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the i, UnHerd and the magazine Standpoint.

We sat down to discuss his new book ‘At Dawn They Came: Soviet Terror and Repression 1917 - 1953’, and his time exploring what remains of the Gulag prison system in Russia. He revealed to me the untold horror of the Gulag.

We also discuss the truth about socialism, its popularity in the West and its dangers. All this and much more…

It was a powerful conversation. As someone who was raised in the Soviet Union and moved to the West, I had a cognitive dissonance when i found how popular socialism and communism were here. You don’t want these ideas to find their way to power, I assure you.

Since a young age I have known about the horrors of the USSR and the gulags, so I don't need persuading. What concerns me is the development in the UK of two tier policing, two tier justice, the erosion of education (introduction of VAT on private schools), and dispossessing landowners (inheritance tax). Crises like global warming, deteriorating health care and housing are being used to justify changes, but always in the direction of greater centralised control. The signs are ominous.

Thank goodness for YouTube channels like this—fostering education through debate, fact-finding, and the pursuit of truth. It’s a shame that schools and universities often don’t teach this.

People like Winston and Giles make the world a happier place for someone like me to live in at present. Brave, brave beautiful men. True educationalists! We need you and your courage, at least I do. Thank you.

This is great.
I first learned about Communism and its horrors when I did my GCSE. The gulags, collectivism, the 5 year plans, the brutality. I was lucky to have a good teacher who really illustrated how awful it was. At 16, I knew it was nonsense and knew the signs to look out for. What the hell are they teaching kids now?

When Yuri Bezmenov described the introduction of soviet communist propaganda into the US, he explained a main goal of their propaganda was to "demoralize" Americans. In the US, the word 'demoralize' is used to express dejection and loss of hope. But I think Yuri was using the word as it sounds, ie de-moral-ize, or removal of traditional morals and values from American society.

In 1980, for a school project on the Second World War, I was tasked with exploring various aspects of the conflict. The prevailing narrative in the materials provided presented Stalin as an ally, and while the Holocaust perpetrated by Hitler's regime was a key topic in the curriculum, I was discouraged from delving into the brutality of Stalin's regime, including his policies of ethnic cleansing, genocide, mass deportations, the Gulags, and Soviet concentration camps. My history teacher, who was fantastic, advised me that discussing these aspects would be seen as going off-topic and would not be well-received by those grading my work. This experience highlighted how certain historical topics were considered too sensitive or peripheral within the context of the prescribed curriculum.

My father and his family, living a quiet farming life in eastern Poland, were awoken by Russian soldiers, labled “enemies of the state, and taken to Siberia where they did hard labor. ( 1939)

Omg finally someone gets it, I haven’t even watched this yet. But this is exactly how it happened in the sov union. But it also happened with the NAZI party, with all Jews being blamed.

It does not bode well for us in ten years… our kids will be conditioned and we will be responsible for the next horror of the century…

What a great discussion! Gilles Udy is so interesting, a real treasure. The play on all these words created over the years have brainwashed us into thinking and associating the words to positive thinking and positive meaning. We all need to re-learn so much… Thank you!
