How Luke Skywalker Got His Green Lightsaber Crystal

Star Wars fans have been wondering how Luke found his green kyber crystal ever since the Star Wars canon was rebooted and Shadows of the Empire was removed. The current run of Star Wars comics is currently telling the new version of the story!

I was team Qui-Gon’s crystal, but I just love the way the new canon has handled Kyber crystals in general. So this is good too.

I like how this shows luke studying aspects of the jedi and other force users, really making him smarter than just grabbing someone's else crystal

That was one of my favorite issues of the series. Getting to see Yoda be his usual troll self is great (as soon as Luke calls him a figment of his imagination he just goes along with it lol). Also gave us some great kyber crystal lore. Like apparently a "young" kyber crystal is a million years old

I find it interesting that the comic seems to be going this route when Soule previously said he wouldn't touch that since he didn't want to contradict Return of the Jedi's deleted scene. I also had the headcanon that Luke's green crystal may have been Qui-Gon's or something and I liked that but honestly it makes sense that it would be his own crystal and I love that it's green and that may be because he communed with Yoda when he connected with the crystal. I love that detail. I actually wondered if Yoda was a vision or did he actually communicate with him on Dagobah. Obi-Wan appearing to him after Luke disappeared was also fantastic. I find the connection Luke made with Yoda very interesting, somehow I doubt that's standard for when a Jedi bonds with a crystal, to recieve visions like that but I like it and it would make sense for Luke's position at this point. Once again, Charles Soule crushes it when he writes about the Force.

I also really like that we learned more about the process of purifying a corrupted kyber crystal that's been bled by a Sith and the fact that in order to purify a crystal, you must connect with the dark sider that bled the crystal in the first place. I love that, I think this is the first time we've learned something new about the process and it makes me think about the way Ahsoka purified two Inquisitor crystals and makes me look at it in a new way knowing this new information. Connecting with a bled crystal and therefore the one that corrupted sounds perilous and honestly sounds like great potential for stories. I hope we see more of the process in the future. This particular Sith and their hall looked really cool as well. It's perfect that Charles gets to expand on the process of purifying since he was the first to expand on the process of bleeding in the first place in his Vader comic's very first arc. Plus it's fitting to explore it with Luke when bleeding was explored with his father, I really like that parallel

Actually I read somewhere online while the director was filming return of the jedi. The blue light saber would blend in with the sky and would not show on screen. So they decided to change Luke’s lightsaber from blue to green to fix that problem.

I like this story on how Luke got his green Kyber Crystal. Also I’m glad that he didn’t use an old jedi’s lightsaber crystal like Qui-Gon Jinn’s. Since I doubt Obi Wan would go out of his way to get his former master’s lightsaber. Instead Obi Wan, most likely got Jedi Holorcons/other Jedi knowledge that Luke would more likely need instead of a lightsaber from a Jedi that’s not longer around. Other than that I can’t wait to see him gather the rest of pieces for his lightsaber though.

Fun fact: In Legends Luke had an additional short-bladed red lightsaber, which he used on a few occasions. Considering that he has a red kyber crystal now, maybe (although doubtfully) we’ll see him wielding this short lightsaber.

I hoped for a Qui-Gon/Luke season of Tales of the Jedi following that crystal through the years, but I guess that's cool too.

If the red crystal is Lumiya’s, that would be awesome because she is a powerful Sith and seeing her back in canon would be great.

A red crystal uh. Kind of reminds me of the how he made a red shoto saber to fight the dark lady of the Sith Lumiya because she used a light whip that Luke struggled to fight against so he made a red shoto one to stand a chance to beat her and he won. I don’t know just seeing Luke have a red crystal just reminded me of that amazing story that I consider as canon for myself

1:14 I wondered if that Sith wasn’t Exim Panshard the ancient Sith Luke battles in Shadows of the Sith; something I also really enjoyed about this part of the chapter is when Luke is overwhelmed by the darkness of his Father, it parallel’s when Anakin is bleeding his first crystal, and Luke’s force spirit shows up and his goodness overwhelmed Vader at the moment. To say the least, “it’s like poetry, it rhymes”

I REALLY would love to see the story in the comic be like... this blue blade is really clashing with the sky and makes it hard to see where my blade is, I think I'll make it green instead!!

Yeah I think Qui-Gons was a better route. Like it’s cool and all to see Luke make his own. There was something thematic in that, somewhere in the background of Luke pulling his father to the light that Qui-Go, his father figure, was there to help pull him too.

Wait, so with the red crystal, does that mean that Luke would try and purify it again (maybe this could be a crsytal for Ben Solo in his padawan years and it's a gift to be used) or are we going to see the canon version of the shoto Luke made to fight Lumiya?
