Mink Handling 101

This video goes over the do's and don'ts when handling a mink. I also discuss the different levels of tameness with mink.

tamed since a baby = no gloves
tamed later (young age) = 1 glove
not tamed = 2 gloves + astronaut suit

A couple years ago I heard my cats fighting on the back porch around 3 am. I woke up and went out to break up the fight. Still half asleep, I reached down and grabbed one of the cats and picked it up. As soon as I stood back up and the light in my back yard was able to illuminate us I saw the mistake I made. In my grasp was a wild mink just looking at me like it was as confused by the situation as I was. I dropped it immediately and it lopes over to the steps off the porch and stops. It turned around and stood on its back legs looking at me for a second then started to come back. I opened the back door and both my cats ran in with me. The mink ran around the porch a few minutes checking everything out then left. To this day I always say I was extremely lucky that I didn't get bitten and tore up by that mink.

Minks have weird skeletons. Hold the tail they calm. Hold around the scruff calm. Hold around chest. Flip out.

Other than being panicked when restrained, the wild mink seems the calmest when it's just sitting on your hand. The other two were much more energetic.

I worked on a mink ranch in the 1960's as a kid, they were just as mean as I would be if I were in a cage all day 24/7/365. And I love the rat catching episodes, a perfect job for mink.

Wow that last one is trained pretty good, did not even need a box for retrieving, next time better give her some ratmeat to chew on before you switch the catch, so she does not feel like you stole it from her. Can't wait for her first bearhunt!

Hello Joseph, I know this might be difficult but could you please do a video spotlighting each of your hunting minks (history) how you got them, when you got them, why you selected them, pros/cons, strengths/weaknesses, special skills, where are they now, and maybe clips from a hunt or two. You could do individual videos for each mink. I know some you no longer have, but they were all special and deserve their own legacy so to speak. That way when people watch older videos and are clueless about the minks you've owned, they can go to your Minks playlist and watch a video on each of them and have a better understanding of the timeline of the hunting videos. You could even release the videos in the order you had each mink. Just an idea. I'd definitely watch each one. This was a great video as well. Thank you!
