The secret trial of American reporter Evan Gershkovich ended on Friday in Russia with a court finding him guilty of espionage. The judge sentenced him to 16 years in prison.

Authorities there arrested the Wall Street Journal reporter in March 2023, accusing him of espionage. Those are charges that he, the newspaper and the U.S. government deny.

Duh! If you work in Russia or visit Russia for any reason, even if you have family in Russia who are citizens, the chance that you will wind up in prison accused of spying or other crimes is high. It has been that way for years and years. If a foreigner can be accused of a crime of any sort, they will be. What sort of daft person takes a job like that anyhow? It is like going to Siberia or Northern Alaska in only your shirt sleeves and expecting not to get cold. I feel for the dude, but he kind of brought it on himself, just by being there.
