The past 2 years were huge for Linux gaming, but what happened to all the old-school open source Linux games?

Free & Open Source Games Showcased In This Video:

* Alien Arena
* Frogatto & Friends
* MegaGlest
* Warmux
* OpenClonk
* Rigs of Rods
* Astromenace
* Pioneer
* The Dark Mod
* AssaultCube
* Rysom

Special thanks to the wonderful Linux Gamer for letting me use his game footage at the beginning of this video!

I'm sure folks will point out mistakes or discrepancies in the release date or licenses for the games - just leave a comment with the correct information!

Also, Ryzom is at the very end because while it is a great Open Source game, it's not exactly obscure (you can find it on Steam!)

I was sceptical but I genuinely hadn't heard of about half of these and I've been a Linux user since the 90s. Good job.

Thanks for this video, really well done and I didn't know about several of the games you listed.

Thanks for bringing these obscure games to light

You missed:
Globulation 2
Warzone 2100
Endless Sky
I'll also mention Freeciv/Freecol but they probably won't make it into a top 10 most awesome list

I just downloaded most of these games from the Mint repository. Thanks for the video! :-)

One correction: Rigs of Rods isn't available for Linux. There's a "Linux version" on CNET, but the RoR website doesn't mention a Linux version, and CNET is known to distribute dodgy software, so I was suspicious of it being trojan malware.

You also have to download The Dark Mod and Ryzom from the publishers' websites rather than the official repository, so I chose not to download those either.

There are so many games on this list I have never heard of or seen, almost sounds impossible if you knew me lol.

Though it isn't being developed, UrbanTerror is a great game. I mean it may be developed but I doubt it. Either way its perfect as is lol

Pioneer looks like someone wanted a modern version of Elite since the 90's elite plus. It was probably popular enough in the late 2000's whoever made elite dangerous realized they could make a new one and people would buy it

Can you make this a yearly video? Cause I don't see a lot of coverage on free and open-source Linux games

openspades its the opensource version of ace of spades. still has a small player base of about 100 or so at any time.

Well, you got OpenArena although that is a custom made game based on Quake 3.

Good video, but please notice that anything with the "NC" clause is not open-source, so assaultcube is not.

Openclonk is a good one, the first clonk came out in 1994 it has been a long way

Do you distinguish open source games and free software games?
