I'm often asked why I choose Linux over Windows and Mac. This is my answer.

This was simply beautiful... It brings tears of joy to my eyes listening to this simplistic narration and video style.

The point you made on being fair to the underprivileged is such a big one. Its heavily overlooked but in my opinion is maybe the most important reason open source software is good.

Wonderful video. Fantastic narration. Eloquent and inspiring.

And kudos for mentioning planned obsolescence.
Thank you!

I didn't know if I was in a final fantasy cutscene or a "for just 25cents a day" commercial.

A great set of points, Derek. Our family desktop, althought custom built by a friend, is 32-bit and rather old now. When Windows ME updates became horrible a few years ago I installed Linux Mint 17 MATE and never looked back. Although I'll soon be replacing it with a used 64-bit Lenovo M93P desktop, the point is that Linux extended the life of that machine for years and Mint ran flawlessly during that time. And almost nothing gives me more pleasure than finding a "pawnshop rescue" laptop and giving it a new useful life with a Linux distro install.

This is awesome.

One thing to note that source code also educates programmers and hobbyist on how to make an operating system.

Excellent video. Btw - funny how many people out there already use *Free Software* on their Windows machines, without knowing what's behind it [Richard Stallman / GNU project / GPL / Free Software Foundation etc..]

Your narration made me emotional and gave me a relaxing vibe. I don't know why but this video reminds me of 'Every cloud has a silver lining'.

Thanks for such a simple yet impressive video DT. Without any fuss, spit venom or any holier than thou attitude, you've clarified why we must go the FOSS way.

The first point is way wrong. You don't own the source, you get a license to modify and redistribute if you adhere to some legal rules, specially GPL licensed ones like the Linux Kernel.

Fully Agree on all points, Derek :)
Presented very well, with good pacing of speech and good motivation as to why, per category.
Thumbs up.

(ps.. although for most, we still do often need a little bit of proprietary software, abeit free of charge, to have all our hardware usable under Linux distros (think firmware).
I hope this will change in the near future)

Excellent video, thank you! It's brief and easy to follow without oversimplifying. The focus on practical advantages has greater potential to appeal to people compared to more philosophical arguments. The tone is serious but not overly so.

Sir Would Java be of no use in future because of growing use of Python in web dev, data science, ML, AI and
Growing Use of KOTLIN, DART flutter in Android dev side? If it is not so plz do explain in detail the advantages of Java and it's uses in comparison to python

Enhancing the lifespan of your devices with open source software is not only a great way to save a buck, but it also helps the environment as the production of electronics is quite resource heavy and produces lots of pollutions, toxics etc. Imaging a world where not everybody buys a new phone every year or two. Thanks to custom roms i can use my 5 year old phone with latest android and everything is perfect. Sadly now some manufacturers won't even let you unlock the bootloader of your phone. These devices are truly throw-away after 2 years, which is gigantic waste.

Some really good reasons for supporting FOSS, some of which I had never thought of before. Thank you.

Since linux doesn't change out from under you all the time it is almost like a safety zone. Decade after decade. In fact I don't even notice the version and flavor I'm using. vi/vim looks the same to me. Calc looks about the same to me. Browsers look about the same. The C/C++ programming language looks about the same to me. The speed has remained too quick to measure. You have to be stupid to get caught up in the maelstrom of needless change happening outside of linux. Basically it's just a bunch of unsatisfied people that never learned their tools in the first place hoping that if they keep spinning something will work for them.

While I appreciate the effort, this video is really bad about muddying the relationship between Free/Libre Open Source Software, and just Free or "gratis" software. And all throughout the video there are images representative of software that's not even open source (such as Borderlands 2 being played on ubuntu).

At around 3:16, there's a graphic with several pieces of software mixed together that are only free of cost, but not necessarily free as in freedom.

Android and Virtualbox are the largest offenders in that image. GitHub also, perhaps (now that it's owned by Microsoft). And even ubuntu. These are free of cost, but not necessarily completely open source, nor do they necessarily have licenses that protect the freedoms which define the "Free" in "Free and Open Source Software."

It's important that these distinctions are made, especially if you're creating media targeted at those who are new to the world of Free Software. Mixing all of this non-free/psuedo-free software together with pure libre software will start people off on the wrong foot.

When the overarching message of your video is "We deserve to own our software", and when you're repeatedly touting the tenants of being able to see the source code, it really behooves you not to be displaying things that contain closed-source parts.
