Ghosts, genies and the science of sleep paralysis

Sleep paralysis, being paralysed upon falling asleep or awakening, affects about 1 in 5 people globally. @DrBalandJalal has experienced it since he was a teenager and has spent roughly a decade trying to work out the science behind this mysterious phenomenon and how best to avoid its potentially traumatising impacts.

DISCLAIMER: Dr Jalal's ghost theories don’t attempt to explain all paranormal activity or discredit supernatural/cultural beliefs. Research must verify his theories. Meditation-relaxation therapy is also seeking further confirmation with larger studies.

NOTE: Dr Jalal is no longer affiliated with Trinity College and is continuing his studies @harvard .

Thank you for uploading this! I used to suffer from chronic sleep paralysis I could not sleep for days at a time and when I tried looking into it a lot of people told me I had a dark entity attached to me. Once my mental health started to improve and I did a lot of work to remove general fear from my life the paralysis stopped! It’s amazing what the power of your mind can do.

I never heard of sleep paralysis until it happened. I saw a shadow entity during the experienced.Terrified the life out of me. Mind you, I never heard of this stuff prior to the experience.

I have experienced sleep paralysis so many times that it doesn't bother me anymore. It was scary at first, but I am tired of having it for almost every night. Later, I decided to just calm myself down and trying to sleep within my dream. I ignored all hallucinations, and I talked in silence, "don't bother me! I need to sleep." Is this weird? It's been 7 years or so, and I still experience it up until now, though. It would be nice if I could completely escape from this disturbing sleep experience.

This is a good explanation. However I had it recently and saw a shadow staring at me from the window which I’d left open that night. It was evil and had an orange glow radiating behind it. I could also feel myself being attacked. I initially thought it was the light from the sunrise. But when things returned to normal there was no orange light. My curtains were swaying too. I only experience it this bad when I leave my bedroom window open. I live right next to a woodland too.

Once my father was staying at a persons house in Pakistan with his friend. They slept in the basement. That night my father said he was being attacked by this black demonic force. He was paralysed and couldn’t talk. When this attack stopped, he got up and told his friend who it turned out had also experienced the exact same attack occurring in the same way at the same time as my dad. This seems more than simply psychology at play here.

Put night lights in your room. Do not sleep in dark rooms. Light it up. I have been keeping my room lit up for years now and nothing happens to me when I sleep. I had a few times (years ago) where it felt like something was above me, pulling me out of my body when I was sleeping. Try the lights. Let me know if it works for you. It works for me. I have not had any nightmares either, since sleeping with lights on.

I had early hours of this morning but once I came around, I tried to go back to sleep but the paralysis set back in instantly. I thought to regain control and what happened next terrified me, as I sat up in bed I heard a husky cackle come through the darkness from the corner of the room.

I had sleep paralysis this morning. I had lost my mom this year... and has been coping with her loss... in addition, i have had a history of insomnia since last 20 years, i m 39 now.. but since last few weeks, i have been sleeping without any medication... in bits and pieces though, all night. So today i had a strange experience, had sleep paralysis... at the same time i felt my moms soul is there as i could feel someone putting the blanket on my feet... which my mom used to do whenever she saw me sleeping and out of blanket... she would just come and tuck me in ... so i don't know if it was anything spritual... or whether scientifically, it was lack of proper sleep, combined with PTSD, which had led to sleep paralysis. or something else.. Enlighten me please...!!!! I remembered my mom while going through it.. and in next 20-30 seconds i was out of it.. sweating profusely though.

I used to get this quite often in my early 20’s. Eventually it went away. Recently it’s come back again (I’m in my mid 30’s) however also recently I’ve been binge watching a lot of paranormal, unexplainable, mysterious, and scary type of videos on YouTube. I really think that because it’s on my mind, it’s been causing it to happen. I do believe that it can be spiritual but at the same time wonder if it is our mind playing tricks on us. Regardless of what the root cause is, I command the spirit or entity to leave me at once, and I tell it that it has no power over me. I am stronger than you and I am a being of Christ. I believe in Jesus and I am made of light and you have no power over me and I cast it out, and the event stops almost immediately.

While episode is happening. I can't breathe, no air and gravity is definitely a factor. I'm screaming out loud until I turn red, but my wife wakes me up saying baby you having those dreams again. I hate entering and fighting it because 1 minute may feel like 2 hours of battling.

Yesterday I suffered a sleep paralysis and I heard something jumping and running around my bedroom but I couldn't do anything.

Whenever this happens, I mean every time, I can see a spirit mass right next to me after trying like hell to wake. Why do they like to bother people when they sleep?

Jus experienced this last night. Holy shit was it scary. It never touched me but was a scary girl that taughted me and dared me to open my eyes to see her....I slowly felt myself drift into "regular dream" and was able to awake after a few minutes. Never want to experience that again

I used to get these in my 20s. I remember the worst one I ever had was with a Windigo. I'll never forget how it looked. It had a black veil body, a white face with 3 red eyes.

I have also seen a witch, which many people describe as a man with a hat.

As I grew more stable in life and more aware of Sleep Paralysis and that fact it's just temporary, I slowly stopped having the episodes.

But the experience overcomes your body with a horrible dread and you can't move. You can only look around your room and see this figure there

Beating sleep paralysis is like beating a nightmare. Once you know what's going on, the fear of the unknown is defeated. You know that it's temporary and you can wait it out. At that point it just becomes a movie as you watch the figure move around and then disappear from your life and everything is back to normal again.

If you want test subjects (since I'm sure it's very difficult to test in a lab setting), I'm able to experience sleep paralysis and its visual hallucinations along with the feeling of pressure on my body, a sense of dread and impending doom, and being able to feel presences around the room (especially in shadows).
I successfully taught myself to lucid dream years ago and this was a side-effect. Sleep paralysis hallucinations were so awful that I intentionally forgot how to lucid dream so they would stop happening (which worked). Otherwise, I'm healthy no mental issues. Can travel at my own expense to participate in research. Would just need some time to retrain myself.
I'm a big fan of numerous people and works created through Cambridge University. Also completely guessing the subject matter of the video based on the title since it hasn't premiered yet.
