YouTubers Won't Buy the Sony a6700... And Here's Why

Is the Sony a6700 worth buying? Well that depends. It is an incredible camera but it is also being marketed towards "ambitious content creators" and I personally think it falls short of that claim based on my experience. Today I want to talk about a couple big problems this camera has based on how they are advertising it.

The features on the Sony a6700 are highly impressive, there's not doubt, but are they the right features for the right audience?

So let's dive in and talk about whether or not "ambitious content creators" are going to actually buy the a6700, and if not them, then who?

In case you don't watch the video, I think this camera is INCREDIBLE. I loved my a6400 and think a lot of people will love this camera too. I just don't think it will be the go-to YouTuber camera for the reasons I mention at around 0:30 in... I'm not saying you shouldn't buy it... I'm just saying people doing what I'm doing won't.

There is nothing wrong with a6700. This video should be titled why full frame is better than apsc.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you. The A6700 is great choice for content creators/youtubers. It has some really great features for solo or budding creators that I think are very valuable. I’ve had the EOS R, R6, S5, A7IV and even the S5II. But I was gravitated towards the smaller set ups like the A7C (which I also had but the menus were frustrating). There are people out there like me, who are hybrid shooters, but are looking for smaller set ups and are kinda tired of lugging 2-3 FF lenses around lol

With 6700 you can look tourist and get incredible footage. In my opinion 6700 os perfect B cam. No overheating, 4k 60fps etc

If you have a7iv then yeah no need for 6700 unless if you’re wanting a B roll camera.. but for beginners I dk think 6700 is a really good camera +cheaper lens.. the Sony 11mm is a beast it stays on my camera. I just bought the 6700 coming from a6600 I know it’s not much of an upgrade but I did want the articulating screen, 10 bit slog3 and the menu screen is better.
I really really wanted an a7iv but the lens are pricy at least the one I wanted so I think I’m going to wait another year, save some $$ and then go full frame.
I’m excited for my 6700!
Thanks for the video

I think this camera works well for people who want newer features and high framerates without shelling out big money for the a7iv which is $3200 in canada. since this camera is $1899 (1999 with a 16-50 kit lens)and the lenses are also cheaper its a good value sentiment and works well enough in lowlight compared to something like older sony and canon cameras without dual native iso. also i think this makes a great travel camera its significantly lighter with an apsc zoom lens.

6700 is PERFECT for vlogging
-lighter than full frames
-recording 1080p it doesn't overheat
-cheaper than full frames

I started with the a6000, a6400, then the a6600. It was way cheaper to master my Sony camera before going to full frame. Now I own the A7IV with 3rd party, G, & GM glass for my pro work. I did purchase the A6700 for the new AI autofocus and for the longer reach the crop sensor will give me. You are spot on about low light capabilities between APSC and Full frame, no contest! But for daylight wildlife photos, the A6700 will be great.

You should try it because you had horrible stab and focus issues in this video.
You also have a misconception that you need more skills to make a crop sensor look good? 99.9% of people can't tell what a video was shot with. FF isn't going to make your videos magically look better.
Who's buying this? Apparently a lot of people as it's sold out everywhere. You talk about low light and content creators. I don't see any content creators on YouTube not using studio lighting. People aren't making videos in their closet with lighters. BTW content creation goes beyond video, and way beyond Youtube. With autofocus from a7rv, BIF is something this can do very well, not sure why you think that is funny.

This video reminds me of the old computer buying adage: “buy the software you need first, then buy the computer that can run the software.”

As for photography, always buy the lens you need first, then buy the camera. An excellent lens will make even the most marginal body function like a champ.

If you’re “stuck on Sony”, I recommend you get that “jewel-like” 50mm 1.2 GM — it’ll make you forget about whatever other limitations your body may have.

Is it fair to use the 6400 lowlight video performance as point of comparison when the a6700 has the same sensor as the fx30 (so its way better in low light video by default)?

Interesting video. I clicked because I'm a YouTuber and I'm buying the a6700, tomorrow. My camera store called me today and let me know that it has arrived but they can't process my order until the embargo is lifted on August 3. But, I'm not buying the a6700 as a video camera. I'm buying it as a stills camera. I'm a wildlife photographer and that is the main focus of my channel. I prefer APS-C cameras for wildlife and specifically small bird photography because I like the extra reach of an APS-C camera. My new Sony 200-600 will give me a 300-900mm full frame equivalent field of view. This is perfect for birding where, even with lenses like the 200-600, you crop a lot. I haven't owned a Sony camera since my first digital camera over 20 years ago. It had 1.3 megapixels! I've been on Nikon and Canon for years but when Sony added their AI Autofocus chip to an APS-C camera, I had to try it. I do like the easy dial to switch between photo, video, and slow-mo. Often I'll include a quick video clip of the wildlife I'm working on in my videos but it's mostly photography and photography tips on my channel. My Canon R7 has an easy video/still switch that makes it easy like the a6700 does. For video, I usually use a DJI Pocket 2 with its built-in wireless mic system. It doesn't offer amazing footage but it is nice and steady and much more convenient than carrying ANOTHER full-size camera system around with me. At home in my studio, I do usually use full frame and f/2.8 or even f/4 zooms for videos where I just talk to the camera. They can look pretty great. Just the right amount of bokeh and subject separation without looking overdone. Looks like you are about to hit 1000, congrats!

Thanks for your thoughts :). Totally agree that full frame plus 1.4 lens is going to be MUCH better (and yes I saw your match flame comparison test) than a smaller APSC/less sensitive lens. AGREE :)! That said, SIZE and WEIGHT matter to me MORE, and I DO find that for night time shooting the Sigma APSC 30mm 1.4 lens coupled with the A6700 (my next camera) WILL be sufficient. Again, #! for me is size and weight, cuz I'm a constant international traveler and MOST of my shooting will not be in significant darkness (along with the 18-135mm sony and 70-350mm Sony zoom lenses that are tiny for what they do and light).

After being in the full-frame world for about 6 months … I’m leaning towards the a6700. Reason: size, weight, and being discreet in public. I have a Canon r3 and although image quality is REALLY good and battery life is great, the lenses are huge … the whole set up is huge (especially with a ninja v mounted) and heavy and I often don’t feel like lugging the beast around. Plus it’s really expensive and I’m afraid of damaging it 🙄. People stare and treat me like I’m shooting some professional documentary or show. I’m less likely to go out and just have fun and shoot stuff. It was my fault, I didn’t care how big the set up was when I purchased it, just as long as I had insane video quality and could take good photographs. It’s too much to lug around and I end up using my iPhone more often. The a6700 seems like a good compromise in a small convenient form factor.

Wow. This is gold in terms of value for small content creators like myself looking to upgrade or get their first mirrorless camera. Thanks! Deserves way more views!

all i have is a sony zv-e10. it's supposed to be a small camera, but for vlogging zv-e10 is still too big. a6700 is interesting because of all the great reviews from youtubers. but from my already small zv-e10, i'd rather buy a much smaller and compact zv-1, rather than go big.

Maybe make a video of the top 5 best and worst things you think about the Sony A7 IV?

When you say Youtubers won't buy this camera, did you mean Youtubers who vlog from inside their apartment in the dark hallways? Perhaps you could have been more specific on that. Because content creations is diverse in a way with different formats that other Youtubers would be fine using this. So hopefully, you could have been a bit more precise in your delivering. By the way, thanks.

A good content creator could use only a GoPro and be successful, I don't believe you need a 1, 000-dollar light setup. to make a good video on APS-C, I agree with you that people should start with something used and hone their skills, but at the end of the day, only good content get views.

Thanks! Low light has been a factor on so many of my bad Samsung phone shots. So, now that I'm looking to upgrade to an actual camera, I sure don't want to have the same problem!
