Patients often ask whether they should have their upper and lower eyelid surgery performed at the same time. The answer varies according to the patient. In this video, Beverly Hills facial plastic surgeons Drs. Jason Litner and Peyman Solieman discuss when upper and lower blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) should be performed separately and when they should be performed at the same time.

It is important to think of the eye unit as a whole. A key concept in successful facial plastic surgery is achieving facial harmony. Patients who have more pronounced bagginess on one portion of the lid may opt for surgery on the area that requires more work. For example, if the patient only has heavy undereye bags but the upper lid has remained in good position, then a lower blepharoplasty would be enough. However, if the patient is experiencing moderate bagginess in one region and significant bagginess in the other region, it generally makes sense to perform upper and lower eyelid surgery at the same time. This is because correction of one area and not the other could draw more attention to the area that was not treated.

The best way to find which surgical plan will work best for you is to consult with your facial plastic surgeon. Drs. Litner and Solieman invite all interested candidates to schedule a consultation with them at their private Los Angeles practice.
