Innocent people don't have NDAs for their shitty behavior in relationships. The only problem is that this didn't come to light sooner.

Well then, another artist I have to separate from their art.

Finally soneone who says it well. Rarely in videos containing such a subject do people consider every aspect- The good the bad and the ugly.
It needs to be talked about. A public statements will propably take years but who knows

why does he hand out NDAs for women to sign at the drop of a hat? WHO does that? What a creep

A lot of people say that asking potential lovers to sign NDAs or DNDs kinda sus. I agree, but it seems superfluous. Every male heterosexual Neil Gaiman fan I have ever known knew what his character was almost immediately upon starting to read his work. All of us hated his stinking guts therefor (and also therefore).

No inside information is needed; he tells you in his books. You say you either love or hate a Gaiman work. That's true for me as well. The reason is that Gaiman's literary mortal compass fluctuates wildly and seemingly randomly. It's as if he were wandering in ancient Memphis (ever hear of _non compass Memphis?_ Sorry about that, but a punning linguist is a cunning linguist).

This does not mean that evil characters are necessarily a reflection of evil writers. Indeed, writing about evil appropriately, well, intensely, and most of all *ambiguously* is the difference between drama and melodrama. But, just as effective music resolves at the end, effective writing must revolve to a moral center or start with one. Gaiman's work never really does, or have the idea that the moral compass points to a moral center somewhere, even if one cannot see it.

This explains why Gaiman, almost entirely alone in the field of science fiction and soft fantasy, has literary as well as popular fame. For decades now, the literary establishment has consistently insisted that the unit of criticism is the _sentence, _ in some cases the _word, _ and all that stuff about telling a story is for _hoi polloi._ He can certainly tell a story, but he does so by violating a lot of standards, and this in and of itself seems to appeal to the postmodern sensibilities of lit crits. It sometimes makes for good and exciting reading, and it sometimes deconstructs into a haze of nothing. Gaiman doesn't so much tell stories as he does deconstruct storytelling and make metatext out of text and present it as text. Consider _Coraline, _ one of his tamest products; at every chapter something is turned on its head and becomes its own opposite.

Those who can't write, criticize, and they kind of resent good writers, and they like it when a Gaiman or a Palahnuik or a McCarthy comes along and performs facial urolagnia on convention. But there is a depressing sameness to Palahnuik and McCarthy, who are kind of one-trick ponies by comparison to Gaiman who, a bit like Zappa, cannot be pinned down to one style, except at a deep level of themes. Also, Palahnuik and McCarthy have extremely strong and consistent moral centers, though they could not possibly more different from each other. You never know where Gaiman's compass is going to point. Sometimes you love it, and sometimes you hate it. Gaiman gives the impression that, like that Scissor Sisters song, he can't decide. And that's extremely dangerous when part of your life is ideally supposed to be good all the time, like sex.

Which is why I and every male heterosexual Gaiman fan I have ever known thought him kinda sus from reading his work alone. He writes like a Ted Bundy, to whom women flocked to like flies on shit, and he killed them. Which is exactly what happened and exactly why we male heterosexuals got called misogynist and anti-feminist when we tried to point it out to others. One can only take so much hostility or ignorance for stating the bleedin' obvious before retiring, saying, "OK, have it your way, but don't say I didn't warn you." The only consolation is the ability to write a neener-neener-boo-boo "I told you so!" such as what I am writing.

As for where he gets the idea that such contracts are socially acceptable, it's probably from marriage. Is it not a wonder that what Man hath joined together cannot be separated except by teams of lawyers at a cost of thousands and thousands of dollars? (C.f. R.F. Laird).

I discovered Gaiman a few years ago at about the same time as I discovered the writings of Carl Jung. I quickly came to regard Gaiman as perhaps the single greatest currently living fantasy writer. From a more Public Relations point of view, however, I do think it's fair to criticize him. Namely, that he voluntarily chose to connect himself with traditionally left wing causes (e.g. feminism) in the first place. Quite frankly, we now live in a world in which straight, white, cisgender men are laughably easy targets for persecution. A man who meets these criteria, therefore, may as well revel in his own villainy, continually doubling down on whatever controversial opinions he might voice or activities he might participate in.

"In my own opinion, no one else's, innocent people don't run." This is a comment so naïve as to be downright absurd. This view assumes the existence of some sort of moral Absolute against which the ultimate value of all things can be determined. This is an effectively religious statement: "Trust me or else." I am curious, were all the peoples persecuted by the totalitarian states of the 20th Century guilty and worthy of their fates simply because their respective governments deemed them so? Were all those who fled from the Reich, or who defected from the Soviet Union, guilty because "innocent people don't run"?

Just my two cents. I honestly don't care much about Gaiman's lifestyle one way or the other. I haven't been paying attention to these allegations. Everyone's accusing everyone of something. I just hope he keeps writing.

I honestly lost a lot of respect for Gaiman himself after all these allegations. The Ocean at the End of the Lane was my gateway to his literature and The Graveyard Book, Norse Mythology, Anansi Boys and Stardust are among my favorite novels. I also love Good Omens but I can’t say how much of that is Gaiman and how much of that is Pratchett since that was more of a collab book. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was Pratchett’s idea(which I’m sure it was). I hope that makes sense. But I don’t think I’m going to purchase any more of his works. I can just enjoy the ones I already own. Shame on him 👎. My prayers go out to the women he’s abused

Love the video, agree his work is either great or shite. Also, please there is no D on the end of Gaiman.

I just saw a video about this Good Omens' fangirl, she said one accusation I think she said a girl on Tumblr, which I use Tumblr, he's decently active there but I unfollowed him a year ago, cause he kept flipflopping on his opinions. Supposedly a girl said, she was a fan him and of David Tennant, he offered to give her David Tennants hotel room, if the girl sent him nudes. And I was like....YIKES.

I feel so bad for the victims it must be really hard to stand up against someone who has so many fans and has a lot of money 😢. It sounds they have a lot of evidence. I never read any of the rumors! They for sure buried them. I stand by those young women, there is a lot of things in their stories that make me believe them. I must admit I'm crushed it does hurt. Can't trust anyone really.

Interesting. This is the first I'm hearing of this - at all. After listening your take I browsed a few other YTers and read the allegations.

Sandman was a colossally massive influence on me when I was a kid; I read all 10 volumes probably a dozen times over the years. I was less enchanted with his prose so my fandom was pretty much just Sandman. Met him briefly in 2012 at an Amanda Palmer concert; he did strike me as quite authentic and seemed to really appreciate my saying how much I'd always adored Sandman.

But. Then there was the Sandman netflix show, which I've commented on on your channel, and his asshattery defense of Rings of Power, and between these two things I was so disgusted that I simply decided I was done with him; I'd never read anything of his again or listen to him speak on anything at all. So while this was all brewing, I was totally unaware.

It's bizarre - at least to me, personally - given that, after all, Gaiman is and ALWAYS HAS BEEN the wokest of the woke. It's not even politics for him; he seems to have always believed this stuff as principle. In his Masterclass, which I watched, he explains that in Sandman the whole point of making Death female was to undercut patriarchy and some nonsense about "the sexism inherent in language"... because people have an image of Death as male from The Seventh Seal, so you flipped that one over, clever you... none of which I ever once thought about while reading Sandman a dozen times over a decade. I just thought Death was a great character and that was that.

And it's almost a cliche when someone who identifies as feminist gets slammed with charges, but HIM?? And some of the things the women have to say in the allegations are such trope-y toxic male stuff - "I'm a very wealthy and powerful man and I'm used to getting what I want"...

Like, bro, so, you've had these deep moral principles about how to treat women for 50 years, or... not? So... what's actually been up with that for you... for the last half century?

EDIT: also there's the fact of his lifelong friendship with Tori Amos, who was *also* a massive influence on me as a kid, who, let's see, founded RAINN...

I could go on. Bizarre.

Your mentioning it having been muted would explain why I've only become aware of it really recently. Talk of NDAs and hush-money. All horribly sordid and nine of it casts him in a good light...

With the consistency in the stories and the amount of stories adding up, this doesn't look good for Gaiman. Disappointed is an understatement. As a writer who looked up to him my whole life, who is also a survivor of SA and coercive control, it hurts on a soul deep level. Great concise reading of the situation and a good video. Thanks.

So Gaiman got his end away by sweet talking and promising « I will still love you in the morning ». So what?
As it happens, I do not particularly like his books.

I really enjoyed his American Gods, Coraline and Norse Gods books. I admire him creatively and he probably HAS influenced my writing a little. (Just released the latest Deathsworn Arc Book by the way - 7 years late! :P ) Is he guilty? I don't know, but I don't like this modern trend of people getting a 'trial by media'. It's far too easy these days to destroy someone's reputation by flinging accusations at them. At the same time we have to be mindeful of celebrities being too protected to be properly investigated. Nobody would like to see another Jimmy Saville scenario come about. :( How's the writing going by the way? Have you found a publisher yet? Or have you caved in and self-published? I seem to recall last time we spoke you were looking for an agent?

I can't say I've read any of this blokes content but I don't just accept an accusation as fact any more due to how many women have tried to destroy men with false accusations in the past. If he has done something then a court will see all the evidence and decide, once that happens then we can target him with our hate. No matter how much we dislike a person we lower ourselves if we presume guilt. Needless to say, if that guilt is proven, then it sounds like "it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy" will be the suitable sarcastic response ;)

Man WTF?! Another comicbook genius?! I mean, this really sucks. I read the Rolling Stone article and if half of it is true I'd have no choice but to drop him permanently. Next something will come out about Frank Miller or someone else as iconic as him. Not quite as bad as Bryan Singer but he's working on getting it.
