Review for Disney's most recent outing Moana 2. While not terrible, it certainly doesn't live up to its predecessor but still a fun adventure.

It originally being a tv series makes a lot of sense. Agreed with the emotional resonance lacking, it felt like so many things being random and the most catchiest song being about getting lost, yet never actually “got lost” they just found alternative solutions. I took my kid nieces and they liked it enough so I go with that rating while mine being more okay and only worth seeing in theaters with kids.

Moana 2 was switched to be a movie when Iger was campaigning against Peltz during the recent board election. Iger made the move as a demonstration of why they didn’t need new faces on the board.

The film was also developed in Canada rather than Burbank, and was kept secret from Disney’s regular animators until Iger announced it as a film.

The only negative thing I say is in the movie is the bat lady. Once again they "mislead" us on who was the antagonist and her "evil" arch. Apparently she was the gray hero and helped them; my heart was in high hopes there was a villain, but instead they pulled the same move on Elsa, Naromi, Abuela, Amia, and a few more female characters. Just because they are entitled evil, doesn't mean evil.

I saw Moana 2 in theaters and had a lot of fun. While I wasn’t a fan of the new characters, and thought the bat lady character didn’t reach her full potential, it still had a lot of action and engaging scenes that had me glued to the screen, and it still had some nice emotional scenes here and there (some of which hit home for me). It was also great to see Moana and Maui again, especially the latter because he has so many fun lines and his chemistry with Moana is entertaining. Also, some of the songs were quite catchy. It may not have been executed to the best of its ability, but I think it’s a step in the right direction for Disney Animation to get back on track after all the trouble they’ve been through these past few years.

Thanks for your review on Moana 2. For the bad critics online everywhere and Rotten Tomatoes, etc.. I don't understand the hate which pissed so many people off? I watched it yesterday, and it was good, not perfect, but it didn't deserve hate scores and reviews worldwide. Maybe cause they Disney haters or was meant for a TV series, like, who cares? For the new characters, I think them being there is good. If they weren't there, the storyline may go boring for her traveling on her own idk? The whole plot was her looking for people, if they existed in that time being, and in the end, they found her. They were Melanesian's, Micronesian's, and Polynesian's, which is me a Polynesian from the Pacific. Was a great film. I rated it 8.5/10

So, I absolutely loved Moana 2, & I'll even admit that I actually cried during the movie. BTW, the new god in the movie, his name is nalu, but they spell it nalo, but the o is pronounced as a u. I did my research on that.

I watched Moana 2 last night, it was fun, don’t understand the intense hate everywhere, that’s all I’ll say

I think my least favorite part was Moana having a crew. It didn’t really make sense to me because Moana is a master wayfinder now. I was confused by one of her crew having an Australian accent. I did enjoy several of the songs. I also appreciated Maui’s humor.

I agree with everything you said, Brian. Moana 2 isn't as great as the original movie in terms of story and emotional impact, but still has some neat redeeming qualities that make it on par with some of the very best direct-to-DVD sequels, like Lion King 1 & 1/2.

I would NOT compare to Atlantis: Milo's Return because their production cycle was different: that planned Atlantis series was in development at the same time as the movie.
When the movie ended up being well-received by the public but not a success at the box office, they published the completed episodes as a direct-to-video movie.
Moana 2, when it was still a series, entered production I believe in 2020/2021, I don't remember very well... and then was turned into a movie when production was in a very advanced state. They announced it earlier in 2024.

Either way, in terms of quality, I still enjoyed it quite a lot. Not as much as the first movie, but putting everything in consideration (surprisingly good animation from the newly-opened Vancouver studio; still stellar voice acting from returning cast; very good representation of Polynesian culture; a soundtrack with many good songs and some weaker ones; a story that is still enjoyable enough but not as impactful as the first movie)... I still give this sequel like a 7.5/10. Lower than Moana 1's 8.5 but still good. 7 and 7.5 aren't not bad, imo.

Whether people like it or don't like it, I don't care. I know i'm gonna end up loving it anyway. I'll either watch it soon in theaters, or when it comes out on disney plus.
