A paid extension for a basic feature. Hope this isn't the way it's going.

I purchased Origin with the understanding it'd get better. Progress is slow, and now we have to pay for upgrades.

I was hoping for good upgrades. Like using the tool for scanning jobs etc. Imagine how expensive that would be.

This is such a needed feature that should be included with the free software. After the cost of the machine the table the plate and now studio! $200 more is robbery. Not cool

I agree with most on here at how disappointing it is to hear they are charging this excessive fee for features that should be built into a software upgrade for such an expensive tool. Wish I would have known this is how they were going to run their business before I shelled out the money for my gen 1.

Basic software updates should not cost ... anything, especially not $200! I'm sorry but I've spent over $4000 on the Origin, workstation, bits, tools, and other accessories. This is outrageous for this feature. I understand that you have to make money and charging for accessories and the design studio makes total sense. But this is a basic improvement that all cnc machines have by default, not a $200 extension.

I think it is a critical feature for the shaper origin mine has very little use because it’s tedious and time consuming when I have a 24”x24” cnc that cost half of what SO cost and it can do all the work with minimal input this should be a free update to justify the $2800 + price tag and bring in more buyers

I love the product but agree with the sentiment in the comments and have reconsidered purchasing in order to see how this plays out. Basic software updates should be free for a tool of this price. 🥺

I just spoke to you guys on the phone yesterday and had a great interaction. It’s an absolute bummer to see the pricing on some thing that a traditional CNC has no issue with it. I was just talking to my shop hand today about how my laser and templating bit can do almost everything my origin can faster and with less errors.

Looks like I’m late to the party, but wow 200 for a relatively minor software upgrade is insane! I remember requesting exactly this feature during the demo in Germany - amongst a few other wishes. Didn’t realize you were going to charge me through the nose for it. Can’t wait to see what you’ll charge me for the rest of my wishlist. Pretty disappointed!

I have no problem with them charging what ever they want for extra software. However, they got to realize that some like me don’t see the value at their price. Also, I hope everyone complaining is planning on not purchasing the extension or you are confirming the value is aligned with their price. I hope Shaper understands this also has an effect on Origin’s reputation to future buyers.

I was looking at upgrading to the Gen2 and selling my orginal to a friend, not now. I'll keep the original and use it until it dies. I had a feeling that when I heard Festool got involved this is the way it would go. Everything Festool sells is overpriced. I agree with the others, this should be included in an update. I'll update to a conventional cnc when needed.

You guys are great and deserve to get well paid for your excellent work! Please consider a software update introducing an "on tool macro" functionality doing similar stuff as AutoPass and more for repetitive cuts. Click 1 -> roughing pass plus offset. Click 2 -> next depth plus finishing pass.
The AutoPass at 200€ (+ VAT)...Wow! A first glance what to expect to pay for future software features. This one was just over the top. Still I want to support development by paying reasonable prices for new great features, extra router bits, shaper tape etc. Hopefully Gen 1 owners will still get basic software updates even with Gen 2 now released.

The price of all the kit, should allow this to be part of a software update! I can’t believe all those nice people who do the videos etc. are cool with this? I’m guessing Festool are pulling the strings these days. Maybe I won’t ever own one after all.

I feel like Origin is a fairly niche product, for now, and the company is trying to make money from a very small user base. But I also feel like it has a ton of potential for growth if enough people realise the possibilities.

$200 for autopass is incompatible with the latter statement.

The sum you charge here for this extension is rediculous. Buying such an expensive tool with the promise of incremental improvements in the software and now you start ripping off the customers with a feature that should have been implemented in the first place.

The autopass feature is awesome. Price and pricing are problematic. For sure as a client, as a user, i will want it and I will not buy it. It will start to be a frustration when I see shaper origin. Very negative image.
edit 3 weeks later : now, every time I stop, re-enter a depth and start again I am frustrated with Shaper and the paywall ! My image of the tool and the company went down ... way down !

Woooow, So this is how it goes.... The old ginzu knife business model, "but wait, for just $200 dollars more you get...". Or is this going to be like any computer or camera (gopro namely) in that it will be obsolete in 2 years? This is a essential feature that should be available to a tool of this caliber and price. I am eager to hear the reasons for this and I am glad I hadn't shelled out any money yet, this just puts me back on the fence leaning the other way😐

Absolutely ridiculous and honestly laughable to charge $199 for a feature that 1. Should have been included in the first place, 2. Doesn’t even include the use of the new studio, and 3. Is for a $3, 000 machine+workstation that promised improvements overtime.

This is not how you treat customers who dropped a hefty chunk of change on a niche device, and then charge through the nose for features that much less expensive table CNC machines have been doing since day one.

But then this decision is coming from a bunch of people that care solely about profit, and couldn’t care less about the user experience and workflow of their customers.

“Here’s a shiny new Plate, and it works really well, but if you want to really use it to its full capabilities, don’t forget to shell out more money on our (sold separately) proprietary clamps!!”

Price for Autopass is ridiculous for such a simple feature, I could see 25-40$ even that is a little much for just a change in coding in an already expensive platform.
