The function of the large intestine is to absorb fluids and salts from indigestible food matter - and to collect and eventually relieve the body of waste matter.

The large intestine is divided unto the cecum with its vermiform appendix, the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon, the sigmoid colon and the rectum and anal canal.

The cecum is an intraperitoneal pouch-like structure that is about 7.5cm in diameter. It is usually in contact with the anterior abdominal wall and sometimes may cross the pelvic brim to lie in the true pelvis.

In the superior border of the cecum we can see an invagination known as the ileocaecal valve or ileal papilla. This structure is located in the opening between the small and large intestine. It prevents reflux from the cecum to the ileum, and regulates the passage of contents from the ileum to the cecum.

In this video preview, we cover:

0:11 Function of the large intestine

0:45 Sections of the large intestine

n I have an ileostomy. My large intestine was removed and my small intestine protrudes through my abdomen. I poo uncontrollably into a bag, which i change each day... at which point i get to say hello to my small intestine (stoma)... it resembles a bit of arctic red salmon sushi poking out my stomach. It wriggles around lots, like it has a mind and personality of its own... its a cool fact that your digestive system has more neurones than the brain. Because i lost my large intestine, I struggle to absorb water and salt... although my small intestine has adapted over time to absorb more water than a normal person. How did i get here? I had ulcerative colitis which got so bad i almost died from toxic megacolon. How did it get this bad? Through misdiagnosis and ignoring worsening symptoms until it was too late... i thank every day that I am alive, and have come to embrace life with a stoma... but if you are reading this, i encourage you to find out about crones and colitis and educate others about these all too common illnesses.

Great!! You shared very good information. My cousin was suffering from this problem. He was completely upset
during this. He was trying many treatments and medications. But the result was not good. Then, someone told them about the planet Ayurveda. Now he is taking Planet Ayurveda and treatment with a proper diet, and now he is fine. If you
