We mention specialized cells can develop a mucus layer - and that they divide frequently - which can be protective for the stomach lining. However, there's more! Did you know many enzymes (like pepsin) are secreted in an inactive form and don't activate until reaching a different location? Learn more below!

This is just one of the best science channels I have ever seen. The channel needs more subscribers, to be honest.

1. A great question helped us see something we want to point out. We mention at 6:21 that the large intestine's *major role* is the re-absorption of precious water (as well as it being home to many beneficial bacteria). That is correct BUT we don't want to start a misconception that water doesn't also get absorbed in the small intestine - because it does there too. In fact, a larger percentage of water has already been absorbed by the small intestine by the time it gets to the large intestine. But the *major function* - as mentioned by the video - of the large intestine is reabsorbing precious remaining water.

Thank you Amoeba Sisters. I am currently working on a digestive system project in which I have to make a piece of food travel through he digestive tract. Watching this video really helped me understand which directions to take. I love how you included even the tiniest details like the epiglottis and the chyme. I appreciate you a lot. Thanks again!!!

You have to add subtitles in spanish, I live in Mexico and students will go crazy for your adorable videos. They really help me understanding some concepts. Keep on the good work. Thanks.

I managed to make it into college without taking a Biology class, which was probably a mistake. Now I have to take a Biology class when my last experience with Biology was in 7th grade. Luckily, your videos make it a lot easier to take in the material. Thank you! You're a life saver.

I just recently overcame a few digestive issues that have been occurring for about a week. What a coincidence that this comes out as soon as I recover!
