I have opened up several different types of drains including this type but I keep forgetting which is the one in my present house. After watching numerous videos with no luck to remove my tub stopper this video finally solved it for me. The first thing he says is to leave it in the down position and then turn until it comes off!
Ta Da!! Finally, easy peasy. Hope it helps someone else.

What if the drain plug does not have a removable knob on top, and the plug is free turning on the base?

It doesn't work for mine, even though I unscrewed the screw in the shaft of the drain. It's so annoying. It's wedged in too tight and I've already tried using a wrench to loosen the top of the drain. I just want to take it out to clean out the hair inside of it and put in the TubShroom I just bought. it's driving me nuts.

the 9/16 did it for me for the first part but now I need a bigger flat screwdriver for the second part because this is too difficult to twist
