Approximately 40% of U.S. adults are considered obese, and those numbers are on the rise. On WGN-TV’s Living Healthy Chicago Medical Minute, bariatric surgeon Richard Zhu, MD, of the AMITA Health Center for Bariatrics & Weight Loss explains what solutions are available for this serious health condition.

“People with a body mass index of 30 or above have a significantly increased chance of cancer, diabetes and heart disease,” says Dr. Zhu. These individuals might benefit from the long-term weight management produced by bariatric surgery. The latest minimally invasive weight loss surgery procedures include gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve surgery).
