Aaaaand...these are the reasons I decided to teach college instead. I can’t even tell you how amazed I am at k-12 teachers and what they are able to achieve on a daily basis. I think this is why I watch k-12 teacher videos even though I teach higher ed. However, I still get the “entitled student” mentality in my classes, so I’m happy to hear you addressing that. I hope more teachers address it as well since I’ll be getting some of those students in my classes at the college level.

Anyway, thanks for sharing and keep up the great work! 🤗

I am SO excited to be a teacher. My mom is a teacher (she's been teaching for almost 30 years) and has given me SO many heads up. Another important thing to consider is where you're working and the home environments of children. Nobody prepared my mom for hungry and cold children, but every year she buys a few coats for the kids in need and will send them home with canned goods so they don't go hungry over the weekend/break. You seem to love your job so much, and I hope that I'll be ready for it when I start. 2 years to go for me!

This was very helpful! I actually changed my major this morning to become a middle school teacher. I'm doing this much later in life, but I am very excited.

Currently switching my major to education from nursing, which I realized I was doing because of the pressure of needing good money quickly. After a lot of thinking I decided that I would prefer to get less money and do something I actually enjoyed. Great video!

I’m only 12, but I want to teach English Literature. You get to see different peoples opinions, you get to explore the meaning of a text in 30+ ways! I want to work with High School children, as I can relate more with them.
Depressed kids, and anxiety kids in a class is sadly quite common these days.. I’ve suffered with it for 9 years so I can pretty much pick up on stuff if they are suffering with it.
( Many people I know/Seen suffers with it, I’ve seen them change or have a habit of doing something when they are in the worst. )

Also! I’m the quite kid in my class, and hate to stand up and talk in front of others so I can also relate to them on that to. I would call myself a calm and easy going person, so I hope the children can notice on the first day they have with me, they can be like ‘ we have Miss Sweet next! ‘ I want them to be able to feel safe and happy when walking into my classroom.

Teaching is, for me, one of the most rewarding thing in life. However for it to be rewarding, teachers must teach not only from the head but also from the heart.

All the best to Maya and all the other teachers or teachers to be. Continue to be an agent of change for the kids that have been entrusted to you by God :)

I agree with you 100% I am still completing my degree. I've tried many other things and always end up back as an assistant teacher. I am so excited/nervous for the day when I finally finish my adult learning courses, get that degree, and get my cert. It took me many years (10 to be exact) to accept that this is where I belong because I was chasing a paycheck and not something that makes me happy. Thanks for the video. It only confirms my aspirations.

How did you figure out what level of school (i.e., elementary, middle, high) to teach was right for you? I am stuck between wanting to teach elementary versus wanting to teach high school!

HI Maya, you're right, having seasonal breaks is probably one of the biggest perks of being a teacher. Of course the relationships you make with students and their parents are priceless.

In the Central valley of California teachers start at $52, 000 to $58, 000 and go up to $104, 000 per year (after a lot of years). They get health, dental, and vision benefits for themselves, spouse, and kids, and have around 190 contracted work days per year.

I’ve always been unsure of what I wanted to be, but since I was little I’ve always told everyone I wanted to be a teacher and a mommy. 😂 since then I was watching videos like these to see what I truly wanted to be, and whenever I watched I always had some doubts. But with this video, it just made me realize I was right all along. I want to be a teacher. I’m going to try and get into a community college and start from there. Thank you for this video. Much love.

Love this I am finishing my undergrad and I currently own a small daycare. This is the best advice. I am also loving that I have experience with kiddos so sort of have an idea of what I will get myself into lol

I love that you led with patience. My niche is early childhood education. You have to have an incredible amount of patience for 0-5 year olds as well.
