I strongly recommend looking up the incident and reading about it. There’s more to it than can fit in a short. Long story short, He recently lost a loved one and went into a deep depression. He tried mushrooms for the first time and didn’t sleep for two days prior to boarding the plane.

He was not the main pilot and was off duty at the time. He first tried to pull the engine fire suppression levers, which would have killed the engines, but he was stopped. He appears to have had moments of clarity when he warned the flight crew they needed to restrain him. He later tried to pull the emergency exit lever but was stopped by a stewardess.

Since the incident, he is accepting full responsibility and has said he will not fight any charges. He knows that he would have absolutely killed everyone on board if he hadn’t been stopped.

Edit: Apparently, he changed his mind and has pled not guilty to the attempted murder charges.

Props to the pilots for reacting that fast

This is why the faa needs to take pilot mental health seriously instead of grounding pilots for going to therapy…

The man didnt try to activate an engine shutdown system like he talks about, what the man really tried to do was to activate the fire extinguishing systems on both engines to potentially stop all power and stall the plane into a crash

Props to that guy for being able to tell the crew to cuff him and restrain him or it might get bad. Also a big wow to the crew for reacting this fast and saving nearly 100 lives!

He pulled the engine fire extinguishers. Not the engine shut off. He wasn’t just chatting with them he stormed the cockpit. And he was charged with 80 counts of attempted murder. Not 83.

He was going to cut the fuel supply and contaminate the engines. It is not cutting off the engines like andy said. If he did cut off the engines, it would have been fairly easy to get them restarted the 34000 ft. However, when one pulls the fire handles, it cuts off ALL fuel supply and contaminates the engine with fire extinguisher juice. This is irreversible meaning the engines could never been restarted.

I have depression and I’ve had similar things to where I’m scared of What I’m gonna do to myself and others because of my depression. I completely understand what the guy was going through and I hope he gets better.

While I think he should have his license taken, this was obviously a mental breakdown and can only be grateful no one got hurt, it sucks that so many people became a casualty of his actions, but I partial hope he gets help and doesn't go to jail for this.

He did not try to "cut the power", he activated the fire extinguishers for the engines

Aviation industry and medical industry really need to up their game in terms of provision of mental health support and assessments to prevent such. Rogue suicidal pilots suffering from short term depression aren't that uncommon.

thats really unfortunate, i don’t think he deserves that many attempted murder charges because he absolutely had no intent to, he does need serious help though

"83 charges of attempted murder" Goddamn now I kinda feel bad for him

I believe he should be acquitted of all the charges, get "not guilty for the reason of insanity, " and get immediate help.

He didnt use any “emergency shut down” levers as those dont exist. He attempted to pull the fire extinguishers which permanently cut all fuel supply to the engines. Just wanted to point that out, great video!
