I think the white lighting coming from the sun has a lot to do with some of the realism too, so many games simulate ambient light from the sun as being yellow or orange and that only happens around sunrise/sunset. Otherwise, the light we see is white. If you look at this footage, and footage of that super realistic shooter Unrecord they both have the white lighting.

Games were moving away from trying to look realistic and more stylized because we didn't have the technology and every "realistic" looking game looked the same, *try to but not quite there*.

Time to try realism again.

I dont think people understand... This is what the Red Engine from CDPR is capable off... AND THEY STILL CHANGED TO UNREAL ENGINE... ES 6 is doomed...

Just for reference incase anyone wants to download these mods. I have a 3080 and am able to use all these mods + path tracing at 1440p, achieving 30-40 frames.

Does make me wish I had a 40 series card to play at 4k though

Assassin's creed unity fixes and graphics mods are a good example of How mods can enhance games. A 2013 game looking better than most 2023 games....

Its not just the detail and graphical effects, its very much the lighting of the scene, that uses real world colors and not "game" colors. Likely done here with a LUT.

You can achieve some really crazy results if you know how to tweak Reshade. I finally got Zelda: TOTK to read the games depth / shade information properly, and have added this type of DOF to Zelda (emulated obviously), along with slight screen space reflections (which I'm still tweaking), and just the right amount of Ambient Occlusion.

I've messed around with Cyberpunk, with some of the 'no paywall' reshades, and unless you're running at 4k, the games Pathtracing implementation (the core engine) is just really blotchy and messy. The game has a ton of mods on its own that tweaks the raytracing and pathtracing implementation. Ironically running the game at "max graphics" ends up being a blurry, smeary mess, especially faces in shade. I've settled on leaving Pathtracing off, and running a mod that adds some slight pathtracing to the raytracing, and mixes the two.

I notice that these photo realism mods always seem to kill the sunshine. It’s like it works better on a dull, overcast days, or in the rain. Bright sunshine always diminishes the effect for some reason. I’m no programmer, but my eye catches this.

These mods are cool but only ever look good with overcast. Every time I've seen them with direct sunlight, it straight up looks super muted and low contrast. It needs work, but it's pretty close.

by the way I tried the realism shit mod and it's not even playable due to shitty cinematic dof. The mods is only design to say WOW it looks real. If you want to play this mod, you need to turn off or adjust the cinematic dof in the reshade so that you can have better visibility
