In this video I give some of my best advice for starting work as a new junior doctor based on the experiences I had in my first year.

To keep up with my journey, follow me on:

My top 10 tips for new junior doctors are:
0:27 1. Don’t worry about what you don’t yet know
01:14 2. Ask questions
02:13 3. If in doubt, escalate
03:25 4. Master your SBAR
05:03 5. Take breaks
06:57 6. Talk about your experiences
09:40 7. Keep a good list
10:37 8. Leave work at work
13:10 9. Keep up with things you do for fun
14:33 10. Keep on top of your portfolio

I will expand on points 4 (SBAR) and 7 (Keeping a good list) in separate videos, so do make sure you subscribe (and tap the bell icon!) to be notified when I upload them!

I would love to hear what you think of this video in the comments!

Can I add....make friends with your medical librarians! I might be biased but we’re here to support staff and students but especially new staff in the NHS 😊 .

This applies to newly qualified Nurses too! in fact, all newly qualified health care workers. Good advice 😁

Hi! We went to the same university! Was really cool to see you transition from your amazing illustrations to YouTube now! Keep up the spectacular work!

I think one thing that helped me through f2 and now into ST1 of paediatrics is to have the Resus courses done early because they equip you with knowledge and experience to cope with quite sick patients and you’ll be able to manage more problems up to the point of calling your senior for support. Doing those courses made me feel less frantic/nervous/unequipped. They do cost money but if your hospital hosts some courses try and ask if you can attend!

thank you for being so helpful. I am starting next week and I am so stressed and panicking as I am not yet familiar with the system and not confident enough.

A life very stressful. Ages the body. Must find a balance. Selfcare is crucial, seldom practiced.
