YES...I meant 2,000 BC, therefore 1,000 years before Genesis and the Old Testament lol 🤦‍♂️ I Said that first part funnily.

"The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia, regarded as the earliest surviving notable literature and the second oldest religious text" c. 2100–1200 BC (source via Brandão 2020 pg 23)

This is a vid with some background on what the tablets were about. But as we will get into, the Noah's Ark story is legit detail for detail ripped from the Sumerian Enuma Elish. The next video I post will be all about a side by side comparison. Only one key difference really stands out.

People will use this to say "See a flood really did happen! Because another ancient culture talked about it!" But that's not necessarily the case Gilgamesh is a recognized epic, mythical. The fact that the story was then repeated into Judaism does not make it more factual, it keeps it as an allegorical story. A foundation myth.

It's important to remember the early semitic people were nomadic, and sometimes captives to other cultures. The Babylonian exile, and earlier stories from the Sumerian epics would have played a key role in establishing their own religion.

Hence why we see early Judaism as a polytheistic religion that widdles into a monotheist one.

We are starting to get into theological talks. If you want to debate in the comments do so kindly. Remember being a phobe doesn't make you an edgelord it makes you a Jerk. Check my other vids for more fun stuff, and soon to come 'deeper' biblical history and theological debates.

Welcome to my archive! I am posting all my videos as shorts. One by one, follow along! Especially if you haven't seen the originals and are new here. (I promise the quality and content get better as I learned more about recording and pacing)

Soon we will be getting into actual theology, debates are allowed in the comments. This is not your typical religious or spiritual channel, I encourage questions and critical thought! After all THIS is the time for christian deconstruction. We love all and this is a queer space.

I am available on all socials as 'Jegaysus'

Spread love, gAyMEN

the anthropologist in me loves how many ancient stories and myths incorporate worldwide floods makes you wonder why. and of course gilgamesh is the first example we've seen but i do wonder if there were stories before it that also had a flood myth or if gilgamesh was a sort of trendsetter.

i like how in Noah's flood it was corruption and sinners but in gilgamesh's flood, the gods were just annoyed at us existing

This is the equivalent of being upset with your neighbors and sending a nuclear bomb to get rid of them

When the first English Assyriologist found tablets describing the flood from the epic of Gilgamesh he stripped naked.

He was ecstatic that what he found was really important and to him it seemed to authenticate then account in genesis

When you say the Noah story is a parallel I’m more inclined to say that these things belong to the same broad Mediterranean Near East culture and the fact one comes before makes a compelling argument that the account of genesis is modelled on the earlier story. A copy. It’s not discussed often enough but the early books of the Old Testament a styled in a similar fashion to Homer and the Epic of Gilgamesh as to make it more memorable it takes on poetic features so a pre literate society can learn by repeated public recitations.

Yeah, and the things the Epic of Gilgamesh has to say about a certain usurping son of El with blue skin, lightening bolts, and well know Temper, who later goes on to own a garden and have a son in the middle east are Quite interesting

Is it possible they're both telling the same story? Not that one stole from the other, but one (or both) got some of the details messed up/embellished etc.

The Bible wasn’t written when Noah’s ark happened, so even if the epic of Gilgamesh was “written” before the Bible Noah’s ark could’ve happened way earlier on and it made way to the epic of Gilgamesh (the book of Genesis was most likely written by Moses who came way after Noah’s ark)
