This week on Cultural Reset Abi explains how the Pacific was split into three regions. Abi goes through the creation of the terms Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia. She also touches base on how the splitting of our ocean still impacts our region today and how it made way for a thing called "Polycentrism". Sit in and listen to some straight facts from our intelligent youngins!

"Cultural Reset" unpacks relevant societal issues to the Pacific community, and how they're tied back to complicated histories. It is a look into topics ranging from Cultural Appropriation to Climate Change. Each important topic is broken down by one of our village's youngest. Our kids are taking the reigns and schooling us on pressing social, political, and environmental issues.

We really should start writing books in our languages, and not just anthropological books, but like fiction books inspired by our cultures and mythology that young people would love and engage in. I for one would love to have fantasy books written in Wala (one of the languages in Malaita). It’s so important to keep our languages and culture alive through different mediums and getting the younger generations involved and feeling that sense of belonging and security in our identity as pacific people.

I like how this video identifies the problem with Polycentrism - it's true, anything Melanesian or Micronesian is almost always never considered Pacific Islander enough. Makes sense that Polynesians were shown off to the world by the white people because they were favored for their fair skin and one-language and governance societies. However, Polys back in the day should have known better to fully include All three Nesians under the Pasifika Umbrella because now, Polycentrism and Colourism are big issues and it's gonna take a lot to fix that.

Even within polycentrism there's an imbalance.

I'm from the Philippine Island. I hear some talk about it. I tell them we have over 7, 000 islands. We aren't that small. They are surprise when I tell them.

Awesome video am going to play it to my uni students to help them understand why we need to see the pacific as a sea of islands rather than small islands in a big see. Great 👍 work and great animations.

It was actually Jules D'Urmont D'Urville who came up with the terms Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian.
